On our recent visit to Hobart we visited the Cascades Female Factory where the book "The Potato Factory" idea came from. It was very interesting and very sad to hear the stories about the female prisoners.

Mixed views regarding this site. Good to see because it is such an important part of the convict story. Disappointing however as there is not much to see compared to other sites

I am not even a beer drinker, but rate this as one of the best things I have done in Hobart. I did the 1 hour tour of the brewery with Andrew as our tour guide. He was extremely knowledgable, funny, informative and a great communicator. I loved his sense of humour and the way he really seemed to enjoy... More

We'd been told by my partners brother that this site was a "must do" The morning we spent there listening to our guide Kate was informative, engaging and thought provoking. The treatment of female convicts was barbaric and the presentation enabled you to feel some small part of what it may have felt like.

Booked a half-day tour and this was one of the site we visited. Formerly a brewery, turned to former female prison, and now a UNESCO site, this site located in a quiet and beautiful place. You have to pay $5 for entrance fee (fee at that time), but if you go with tour, usually the price already included in the... More

A tour of this World Heritage Site puts the other side of our penal colony's history in perspective. The plight of the women. As there is little of the original buildings left it is important to book a tour and I cannot recommend highly enough the excellent interactive play by 2 actors. In character, they walk you around the site,... More

I would recommend everyone who visits this amazing site watch the noon play, excellent actors who bought history/her story to life. Fabulous! I think many ppl will walk around unguided, not understanding the full story which is let's face it very important.

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour even though it was raining and most of the tour was outside. The tour guide was very knowledgable and gave us great insight into the lives of the women who lived and worked in the factory. Fascinating!!
