The Hobart Historic Walk is the iconic must-do introduction to Hobart's fascinating history and famous sandstone buildings. The Old Hobart Pub Tour takes you into Hobart's underbelly doings of a murky past full of brothels, smuggling, alcohol and shady characters. Both are entertaining and informative guided tours, 1 1/2 hours each, set around the famous Waterfront and Salamanca areas.

We booked this at the Tourist Info Centre, easy to do, left on time, group of 10 people. Roger was our guide. I liked the way he described what Hobart was like when first settled, and how and why it developed. He had some good pictures and diagrams to help explain. After 1.5 hours I felt I had learned a... We thought we were going to see an old gaol but in the first 5 minutes of the tour they showed a picture of what it used to be and said most of it was demolished. The guide was super knowledgable and knew the place inside out but it's just not that interesting. 15 minutes talking about the bricks they... More

On a recent visit to Hobart I visited the Penitentiary Chapel Historic Site which is run by the National Trust. Tours are run by volunteer guides and I found the tour fascinating. The site was a former Barracks and quite a bit has been demolished but they have retained enough to demonstrate the use of the building. It contained prison... More

This short walk (max 2 h.) around the main buildings of Hobart was an excellent introduction to the history of Tasmania. We were lucky to have the guide, a very knowledgeable and friendly lady, to ourselves so learned a lot about life in Hobart, about Tasmania and its place in Australia, about the convict period and what it means to... Found this in the magazine on the plane to Hobart and booked it as soon as we landed. Well worth the 1.5hrs walking around the waterfront learning fascinating history we otherwise would never have heard about. Carrie was thoroughly entertaining with her tales of not only the buildings but the characters of our past. Great way to start and evening... More

Booked the pub tour as the historic walking tour wasn't available the day we were in Hobart. Couldn't have been better! Much more than a pub tour, it was an excellent glimpse into the lifestyle of early Hobart and the interesting characters of the times. Our guide was very knowledgeable and very patiently answered all our questions. Great fun even... More
