Step back in time and walk the road to the gallows in a 19th century prison, be arrested in a modern-day Police Station or put yourself on trial in court.Home to Melbourne's oldest prison, historic Magistrates' Court and former Police City Watch House, Russell Street has been at the heart of crime, law and order in Melbourne since the 1840s. Most of Australia’s infamous characters, including iconic bushranger, Ned Kelly and notorious gangster Squizzy Taylor have spent time within the walls of this amazing precinct. I visited here with friends and there, we could see the exhibitions and also enjoyed group tour. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable. In the goal, we felt how small, cold, and lonely to stay the rooms which prisoners spent their time. It was totally...More

We had a lovely half day at the Old Melbourne Gaol. When we first arrived we were unpleasantly surprised by the price as it was a bit higher than we would have thought / hoped. However, it was totally worth it! It is fascinating, shocking...More

My initial thoughts where that the entry fee was a little high but after I finished the tour throughout the goal decided it was fair. Very interesting not just about Ned Kelley. Allow at least an hour for lookinv at all the displays.

Loved it, very informative but also gave a bit of an eerie vibe. The first (and hopefully only, unless its another tour for entertainment purposes) gaol experience. Alot of things to learn. Loved it. I also took a mugshot as a souvenir to take home.

We did a ghost night tour of the Old Melbourne Gaol. Most of the tour was done with minimal lighting which only added to the ambiance. The tour guide was so knowledgeable and full of information. I had never done a tour of the Gaol...More

We had such a great time doing the watch guard tour. The sergeant was amazing. Loved seeing the history of the gaol. The death marks are incredible. Our group had a great time & highly recommend.

A lot of our history is demonstrated in this gaol as sad as it is. I was particularly interested in the Ned Kelly display and was horrified at how small the cells were.

We enjoyed our visit to the old Gaol and found the wardens very informative and interesting. We did the tour where we were arrested and processed and found this amusing at times and great to go behind the scenes

Price includes entrance into the old gaol and entry into the adjacent "holding cells" where we are arrested and shown the internal processing for this arrested. Can be a bit intense for anyone sensitive to the way prisoners were tested and executed. We spent a...More

Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways
tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary
feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the
city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques,
throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You
never quite know what you’ll find around the next
corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and
even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air

You have to telephone the Gaol or check out the website for night tours, they have three and they run on different nights. I think they release the nights and times up to 2 weeks before. These are different to the day tours.

Access to the gaol for wheelchairs is the ground floor only. The Watch House and Court have wheelchair access.

$28 for an adult: family ticket was $65. Not sure if that restricts you to only 2 children. Way too pricy IMHO.
