St Paul's Anglican Cathedral is a beautiful, historic building, situated in the centre of the City of Melbourne, Australia. It is a place of worship and prayer. St Paul's is built on the site where the first public Christian services in Melbourne were led by Dr Alexander Thomson in 1836. Soon afterwards a small wooden chapel was built elsewhere, and the area became a corn market until 1848, when it was made available for the building of the bluestone St Paul's Parish Church. Consecrated in 1852, this Church was used until 1885, when it was demolished to make way for the present Cathedral. The decision to build on the site of the existing church was made because of its proximity to the railway and soon to be completed cable tramway service. The Swanston Street and Flinders Street corner remains one of Melbourne's busiest intersections today, ensuring the Cathedral is a place at the heart of city life.

Very beautiful cathedral

This Cathedral is smack in the middle of the CBD and tram routes. Very beautiful. We did not go inside.

You can't miss this massive cathedral at the junction of Flinders and Swanston Street. The sandstone building is the home church for Anglicans in Melbourne and Victoria. Its tower is the second highest Anglican spire in the world. While it is featured as an iconic Melbourne landmark due to its age dating back to 1880, it means a lot more... More

Nothing very special compared to ones overseas, but was good to visit and see an old church. I'm sure that the are just as many old beautiful ones in suburbs of Melbourne

If you have seen one cathedral, you have seen them all, yet not true with St Paul's. The interior is tremendous with the beautifully stained wood, tile floors and windows. Worth a look if you are wandering around the CBD, but you will need to pay up for pics!

Situated opposite Flinders Street Station, St Paul's Cathedral has seen many State funerals, weddings and other events throughout its lifetime. Architecturally it is an icon of Melbourne.

Popped in for a visit as I was waiting for the shuttle bus in front of the cathedral. Not much to see, except for the floor tiles and dado (wall tiles) as a feature of William Butterfield's original design. The sandstone gives the building a warm colouring.

Beautiful cathedral, a time to wander and reflect. Catch the midday Eucharist and maybe listen to the choir rehearsals. A great coffee and gift shop.

This is a very impressive building, with the tiles (both floor and wall), organ and all the wall plaques being especially so. However of equal importance in the current troubled times is the banner displayed on the front of the cathedral - a sentiment with which most decent people across the world will identify.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
