If you’re in Melbourne and looking for an authentic British pub head to the Mitre Tavern. Outside of being unable to buy cask ale everything else (including the staff) is terrific.

The tavern began operating as a pub in 1868, making it one of the older pubs in Melbourne. Service was efficient, albeit a little brusque. The history and age of the pub is fantastic

I visited the Mitre Tavern on recommendation by a friend and was told it was either the oldest or one of the first pubs in Melbourne. Upstairs is a steakhouse where I enjoyed the "scotch and shells" which comprised of 2 oysters killpatrick and a...More

Ordered wagyu rump ( understanding that half & quarter breeds can be called wagyu). Apart from (understandably) connective tissue around the muscle mass, there was unusually fine tendon throughout the meat mass. Steak knive was not very effective in cutting through ordered-rare steak. When discussing...More

This is a really nice place for pub lovers. Traditional English pub with great friendly staff and a nice beer garden tucked away in a little laneway. What more do you want? Haha. Almost feels like I'm in Europe.

The Steakhouse was recommended by a friend and was presently surprised by the venue, the steaks are tender and cooked well, the mushroom sauce is a must, the staff were all friendly and helpful. The dining room is great with lots of old world charm

We found this down a laneway in Melbourne. There is a casual pub menu downstairs but we went upstairs to the Steakhouse. Atmosphere was more fine dining and staff were very friendly. We had 2 children (5, 7) and waitress recommended just splitting a meal...More

Found this place by accident. Hidden down an alleyway, but worth the search. The steakhouse is upstairs, it has the feel of an olde worlde tavern with exposed beams, but the linen table cloths and quality cutlery give away the quality of the place. The...More

This bar is a great find. On a small street just off Collins, it's easy to miss, but well worth trying to find. It has a large outdoor area, but it's the inside that is worth the visit. On a cold night there's nothing better...More

Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways
tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary
feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the
city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques,
throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You
never quite know what you’ll find around the next
corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and
even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air
