The landmark Regent Theatre holds a key part in our city’s history since opening as a grand picture palace in 1929. Having survived a fire, a flood, 20 years in darkness and many threats of demolition, the venue reopened in August 1996, meticulously refurbished and returned to its breathtaking former glory.Today it stands more lavish and grand than ever and continues to host some of the world’s most renowned theatre productions.

We've been to the Regent for several performances and had the pleasure of seeing Shanghai Ballet's Swan Lake this time around. It's a lovely old theatre, but I would suggest that staff do not allow latecomers to take their seats during a performance. It's very distracting for audience members who have arrived on time and having had my toe trodden... More

We went to see Swan Lake performed by The Shanghai Ballet, it was superb however, a few issues. It's best to go next door if u need to go to the ladies, during intermission, as the queue was long and only one toilet. The smoke from smokers outside wafted into the main entrance and it was overwhelming. Also if someone... More

Very "grand", very large and very spacious. You will feel comfortable as you watch your show and your view around the person in front probably won't be too restricted.

This theatre is in really great shape - ornate and well maintained and good comfortable seats - my wife and I enjoyed the whole evening as the entertainment and the setting was outstanding - don't know who owns this building but they do a really great job of keeping it at world standard

This is a lovely theatre with plenty of room but perhaps the major attraction is its excellent access for the disabled and elderly. Access to the stalls can be arranged via a lift and once there you are greeted by an incline and no steps.

We went to the matinee performance of Ladies in Black at the Regent. What a grand old theatre! Wonderful atmosphere in this building. The musical was set in the 50's-60's and this was the perfect venue. Thoroughly enjoyed the show and the experience.

This theatre is amazing. The architecture is just beautiful. Lovely old fashioned building, great seating for the shows. The acoustics are spot on for such an old building. Also the staff are helpful and friendly, the snacks and drinks are surprisingly affordable. This is just a lovely venue in general. Also the shows here are world class.

If a traditional old world theatre is your thing then this is the place to see. It's one of those beautifully and well preserved venues. To boot, it has a massive period appropriate reception venue. It doesn't have great modern facilities but that's just not its thing. Think, period heritage old world theatre 🎭

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
