I took this tour on my first day arriving in Melbourne and was thoroughly entertained and educated by our tour guide Alex. He was just wonderful- he showed us around the centre of the city, telling us the history of Melbourne and providing lots of interesting and amusing details- such as explaining the lock bridge, telling us about the eureka... The BEST walking tour I have ever taken. Ellen is an excellent guide, who is a ton of fun to listen too. She showed us a great, local feeling side of the city that I doubt we would have ever found by ourselves. Cannot recommend her enough. Thanks!

had a great time with Ellen walking around Melbourne. Even though we have lived in Melbourne all our lives we saw & learnt things that we didn't know. Would recommend this to visitors or locals looking to learn more about this great city.

5 stars for this free tour, we had a great walk around the city, learned a lot, saw a lot of awesome places that we would never have found, and our tour guide Ellen had lots of interesting things to tell us about the city. I would definitely recommend this if you are in Melbourne.

A minimum of five was required for the tour; only three others and myself showed up - tour cancelled - no mention of minimum required ahead of showing up and waiting for tour to begin. I can't understand why a minimum of five was required - will go with another free tour enterprise and/or the free tour offered by the... More

The free walking tour of Melbourne couldn't have been a better deal. (Don't forget to give your tour guide a tip for all the hard work.) From Federation Square to Parliament, Taco taught us a bunch of interesting tidbits on the history of the city (and some modern facts as well). His commentary was fun and insightful, and he was... Our tour guide Alita was a very endearing and engaging young woman, very passionate about her city., We enjoyed a leisurely walk around the streets of Melbourne for a couple of hours and she engaged us with her stories, history and chatter. Very informative and enjoyable, and to think that she volunteers her time is just wonderful! Thank you!

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
