The gallery is easily walkable from the city centre. Good collections of contemporary art and older works with some good European work. Great set of Stanley Spencer paintings, Henry Moore, Sickert, Ben Nicholson, even a little Lowry tucked in there.

Find "the Centenary Galleries" first, where all the better art is, and you may lose less confidence in WA art curating. The special exhibition "WA Unknown Land" is not an easy experience: lit so your shadow falls on what you are looking at, hung at a surprisingly low height, no attempt made to collect pieces around a view of how... There is a mix of modern and in my opinion pretty average art in the main new building, in my view the best art is in the older restored building to the rear with well known Australian artists of the 19th and 20th century.

popped din to have a look after State Library, not a lot of interesting art on display, they need a display for the holidays in summer.

Not a bad place to spend a couple of hours. Plenty to see across the levels and the location is easily accessible.

We spent an hour in the gallery, mainly on the lower floor which was once a police station and court house. There are some excellent landscapes by Australian, English and American artists as well as some works by Rodin. The other floors are dominated by more-modern works that we found of little appeal.

Interesting combination of new and old. Largely free. The highlight for us was Droving into the Light by Heysen and McCubbin's. The connection (ground floor) to the old court house is worth the visit. The cafe outside is a nice decent eat.
