- Szerenke Z8 contributionsGreat TourOur second time to the Mint. Very informative and never boring. Always great insight into our history of gold. The gold pour is fantastic too. Mesaure your weight and how much you would be worth in gold dollars and they give you a coin at the start at check in to press later and keep.Visited April 2023Written 17 April 2023
- Florence JNewcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom6 contributionsInteresting visitWe did this tour before Covid. We really enjoyed the tour which lasts about an hour booking is recommended but you can just walk up . The guide made it very interesting watching gold being poured into gold bar. There are exhibitions and you can design and make a gold plated medallion There is a shop and a tea room . You can easily walk fro the CBD or take the free CAT busVisited February 2023Written 22 June 2023
- Dan LBunbury, Australia7,494 contributionsMany Mint treasures on display. The Mint is another go to venue when we are in Perth. Abundant treasures on display but we had to be satisfying with viewing. Great to see so many tour groups and hear the enthusiasm of the guides. Probably time to partake in another tour next visit.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 August 2023
- Cate T41 contributionsEssential tour of Perth MintOur guide gave us so much information in an interesting and humorous manner. The tour really gave us a much better appreciation than if we had just wandered around by ourselves. The highlight was the gold pour. Highly recommend the tour.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 December 2023
- Mathew BCanberra, Australia24 contributionsA golden experienceWe recently visited the Perth Mint and what an enlightening experience it was! Although there is a fee for the tour, it's absolutely worth every penny and a must to see past the gift shop. The tour itself was brilliantly structured, offering a comprehensive insight into the world of gold, from historical nuggets to the modern minting process. One of the highlights was undoubtedly the massive gold coin – it's not every day you get to see such a spectacle! Equally captivating was the live gold pouring demonstration, where we witnessed the transformation of molten gold into a solid bar. This was both educational and mesmerizing, especially for the kids. Speaking of the kids, mine, aged 11 and 12, were thoroughly engaged throughout the visit. The array of old coins and various gold nuggets piqued their curiosity and offered a hands-on history lesson. It’s always a pleasure to see them enjoying and learning at the same time. Additionally, the staff at the Mint were not just knowledgeable, but also very hospitable. One of them recommended a pub just down the road for lunch, and it turned out to be a fantastic suggestion – great food in an air condition settingVisited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 31 December 2023
- KJH226 contributionsThe gold pour is worth seeing! This was fun. Paul was an excellent and entertaining guide. The loss of one star is due to the lack of available toilets - just one, in the gate house as you enter. But the gold pour was really interesting. Definitely worth a visit!Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 January 2024
- Ron MMenasha, Wisconsin430 contributionsHidden GemThis was a nice find. We are visiting from the US and had recently arrived by train from Sydney. One of the other guests on the train suggested we visit the mint and we are glad we did. The staff was amazing...I'm sorry I didn't get the lady's name, but when we stopped by 3 hours early to ask about a local tourist map she offered to move our tour up to the one departing in 15 minutes! We had also asked for some lunch recommendations, specifically brewpubs. She had to think about it a bit (and had other customers) but as we entered later for the tour she handed us two. notes with details on two places she recommended. The tour itself was very interesting. Oscar was our guide and was very knowledgeable, funny at times and seemed to enjoy his work. He definitely kept everyone's interest all the way through. The displays and gold pour were also very interesting; I came away feeling a little bit smarter about the gold rush and historical events in Australia's gold industry. Well done!Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 January 2024

I went on the mint tour and had a lovely time. It was the perfect thing to do. The tour did not last long and Oliver (our guide) was incredibly informative and very funny. I will definitely visit again!

Amazing little experience, nice history talk, got to see and touch an actual gold bar, so that was pretty cool and also best of all, photography is allowed. Highly recommend. Our tour guide Suzzie was great and also a nice funny minting experience from Oliver.

Opportunity to visit the Perth Mint, hear about its establishment, see nuggets of gold and watch the process of melting and forming gold ingots. Quite warm in the processing room so take water. Tour guide was very interesting and made the tour entertaining for all.

I had never visited a mint before, so didn't know what to expect. I was underwhelmed by the Perth mint. All I was able to see was the shop, which had over-priced products, unless I was prepared to pay to do a tour. As a government institution, I would expect this to be open to all Australian citizens at no cost. As they refused cash payments (how ironic!), I refused to pay for a tour or make a purchase.

We did this tour as part of the hop-on hop-off bus tour. The one ton gold coin is quite something - almost vulgar! We couldn’t help but wonder if it really was real! The history talk was interesting and brought home what a hard life the early pioneers had. We visited the far away gold area of Kalgoorlie some days later and it is MILES away. The highlight was the pouring of molten gold. As it was near Valentines, it was into a heart shaped mold. Really fantastic to watch and worth the visit on its own. Only downside was the fairly large tour size.

Very informative tour and neat things to see. The molten gold pouring portion is the highlight of the tour. The guides are very good.
Only complaint is group size - over 30 people. Makes the first part of tour a bit harder to enjoy.

Went on Valentine’s Day and it was to see a gold pour that resulted in a golden heart. So much better than we expected. Great guide - Maddie. Thanks everyone

Hi,
For a single traveller in their 30s travelling by themself, is it worth going to visit Perth Mint. And is there much to do and see there and be interested about? Particularly if you don't have large amounts of money to spend on items there?

If you are interested in the inner workings of a Mint. There is an entry cost. For cheaper things to do, look up Perth Walking Tour or visit Claisebrooke Cove

Hi Perth mint, I notice in 'the blurb' on your website it mentions sovereign watches for sale but I couldn't find them on your shop tab? Do you still have them? Am I looking in the wrong spot?
If not, can you advise a good gift for an 80 yr old man! :)

Perth, Australia
Hi there, we sell coin watches in our shop and we do on our website (Although this service is temporarily unavailable due to a website upgrade. We are hoping the watches will be back on line by the end of the week). We don't stock sovereign watches, however, we do sell sovereign pendants and rings that can be made to order. Please call our shop on 9421 7376 if you require any further information. Kind regards

What's the difference between the Perth mint and the mint in Canberra?
TourismCoordinator
Perth, Australia
Established as a branch of Britain’s Royal Mint in 1899, The Perth Mint is the oldest operating Mint in Australia. Wholly-owned by the State Government of Western Australia since 1970, The Perth Mint is empowered to issue the Australian Precious Metals Coin Program as legal tender and also strikes many of Australia’s limited edition collector coins, highly sought-after throughout the world for their superb proof quality and exquisite numismatic treatments. As one of Western Australia’s leading tourist attractions, The Perth Mint also offers a unique combination of activities, exhibitions and demonstrations as part of its admission-based guided tour, enabling visitors to experience the astonishing allure of gold.
The Royal Mint in Canberra is the sole supplier of Australia’s circulating coinage. More detailed information can be found at the respective websites for both Mints.
