If the weather is not good and you drive to Gulf harbour, the ride is a lot quicker. If you want to see Rangitoto and the coast from Auckland ,go from the city. Not a lot of buildings on the island (as it should be) so prepare for...More

I live in Fiordland and in the theory should be able to enjoy native bird life. However I prefer Tiritiri Matangi because I can see in one day far more than anywhere else (as a normal visitor). Trees on Tiritiri have low canopy

Just walking through native woods planted such a short time ago gives one a sense of what original forest and bird life was like prior to the arrival of Europeans. In time the forest will mature and bird life will be fully established to make...More

A fantastic place to see so many different New Zealand native birds in one place. I highly recommend going on a guided walk ($10) as the guide was able to find the birds, name them and also knew where certain birds hung out so we...More

Make this a day trip to walk around the island listening to the birds and taking in the breathtaking views. This is such an amazing experience.

I used to sail past often in the 1970's. A rather sad looking farm, sun-burnt brown in summer with the only character of the place the towering light. We watched as planting days transformed it over the years. And now, what an experience. Takahe (thought...More

Hello! We have a layover in Auckland from Raro and decided to stay a few days before heading back to the States. The one thing we wanted to do is visit Tiritiri Matangi Island, however, our only actionable days are 5/29 & 5/30/17... the ferry doesn't run! Ahhh! Huge disappointment. Question is, is it still possible to go to the island and explore? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Otherwise, can anyone suggest a couple things to do for two nature & animal lovers that will be there? For clarity, we arrive at AKL on 5/28 @ 6:30pm and depart 5/31 @ 4pm. Thanks so much in advance!!!
