Achilles Point & Ladies Bay

Recommended when visiting Mission Bay with family on a sunny day. May get a bit windy and chilly so bring a light jacket.

It's a good thing this place is on trip advisor, as it's one of those hidden gems that usually only locals know about. As mentioned - it has great views of the city! There is some free parking here, but as it is on the top of a mount near the sea - it does get rather windy / chilly..

Well worth the stop as you tour the bays on the southern side of Auckland Harbour. We picked a great day to stop and admire the harbour sights. It's a must do while in Auckland.

There is a great view from the car park at the top but visiting this site is better if you have the energy to walk down the stairway and along the beach as well.

ACHILLES POINT MEMORIAL In New Zealand - I noticed that every neighbourhood/borough/village has a garden - and in that garden there is a sublime war memorial - on which are engraved the names of martyrs from the neighbourhood/borough/village. These memorials to commemorate the supreme sacrifice of martyrs are simple, sober, solemn and dignified - sans jingoism - and have an... More

Wonderful views across to Rangitoto, Motutapu, Motuihe, Motukorea, Musick Point, Tamaki River, the Waitemata and Waiheke. Walk there from St Heliers - great beaches for swimming nearby. The Achilles Point memorial recalls the loss of four sailors from HMS Achilles (then operated by the Royal NZ Navy) in the Battle of the River Plate in 1939.

Achilles point is a great location and has a lovely view of the harbour and Auckland city. For me it was a nostalgic visit and to see a memorial for those who served on this ship during the second world war being a ship loaned to the Royal New Zealand Navy from the Royal Navy. She became famous for her... More
