Matakana Village and Matakana Farmers Market, one hour from Auckland. Close enough to visit, far enough to stay. On Saturday the vibrant farmers market is a focal point for the community and its growers to meet. Produce fills the stalls - fruit and vegetables, delicious home-baking and Italian-style sausages, divine organic chocolate, fine wines and boutique olive oils, locally-brewed beer, cafes and live music. Matakana is a unique mix. Rainbow Valley Farm is a world-famous model for permaculture. You'll find a riverside gallery next to the new cinemas, the best in contemporary literature just over the road from teahouse or cafe.

This is a village quite like nothing I have seen in New Zealand. It has a bohemian feel with individual food, clothes and book shops. The cinema complex alone is worth a visit. There is a short river walk and every Saturday a Farmers Market is held there. Stalls include cheese, jewellery, honey, clothes etc. Take a look at the... More

~70km north of Auckland Matakana is a great place to visit, on Saturdays they have a great Farmers Market which is well worth a visit, otherwise there is plenty of eating and drinking options and a cute river.

This was a very nice, albeit somewhat overpriced farmers market. Full and friendly on a Saturday morning, the stalls were packed with the varied comestibles that the well-heeled and largely middle-aged folks from the vacation retreats nearby yearned for. The food was delicious...fresh breads, cheeses, jams and jellies, macadamia nuts, etc....but somehow lacking in something...perhaps the weirdly chaotic soul of... More

While exploring north of Auckland we stumbled upon this village and the farmers market. Great lunch and wonderful wooden serving board as a permanent reminder of our trip. Also went to Takata winery without an appointment and had a wonderful time tasting wine.

A tiny village to visit, easy to travel around with half day, but there is some activities to participate.

A great open market area. We went on a Saturday and the place was buzzing. There's an awesome pub with a great range or beer and wine and the food menu looked great and there is a huge garden area

Lovely farmers market with fresh produce & very friendly stall holders. Lots of food stalls, great for breakfast or brunch. From your traditional bacon & egg to fish tacos to Italian Cannoli. Very busy place but everyone seemed to be having a great time! Highly recommended. If you are in the area on Saturday, do drop by. Will definitely visit... More

Lovely little village nearby the sea with a very authentic vibe to it, and a few old buildings. Highlight is on Sunday mornings with a market done by local actors.
