Don't let the gravel road put you off. I went out there on a motorbike with my wife on the back. It is well worth the visit. A fair few steps to the lighthouse, so make sure you get there in plenty of time to catch the first sunrise of the new day

It's a nice drive to the lighthouse (gravel road). If you're lucky you will see some seals... You can park your car near the farmhouse and walk/climb up the 800 steps up to the lighthouse. The steps are steep and sometimes uneven, but the view up there is really worth it. I'm not sporty, but I made it - so... More

Although the path is steep it is very doable because of the wooden steps. Unfit people will struggle but lots of rests will help the ascent. The panoramic views certainly make it all worthwhile. It might have been nice to have a ladder up to a certain section of the lighthouse.

The road to get to the lighthouse is a bit rough but the climb to the lighthouse is worth the effort. 800 steps to be prepared!

Absolutely worth the effort. The road was a little dodgy as there had been a lot of rain so it was slow going in some areas, was about 30 min in total from Te Araroa. There is tar seal road for about 5km then dirt. The walk itself is fine up the stairs and is about 20min for the average... More

A leisurely drive around the coast with wondering stock and the possibility of seals at certain times of year. It is a rough road but that adds to the experience and reduces the traffic.

This was the last bit missing in New Zealand - and I have to say, it didn't disappoint us at all! Approx. 700 (easy) stairs to climb up to have wonderful views and breath nice fresh, clean air. Worth the drive!

The drive out to East Cape lighthouse is an adventure in itself with washouts and roadworks and a rough road. The 800 steps are a good workout but totally worth it for the view at the top

Took the road to the lighthouse from Te Araroa. The road is mainly gravel and very corrugated with lots of road works on the way. There is some stock on the road so some caution is required and some road is very narrow - one lane only. Arrival at the start of the track to the top and park on... More

Beautiful view, the walk is doable by all taken at your personal pace with most of it being shaded by the trees and well worth it for the stunning view of the east cape!
