Tamaki Maori Village – Evening Cultural Experience. New Zealand’s Most Awarded Cultural Experience! Experience an evening of ceremonial ritual, powerful cultural performance, storytelling & hangi feasting. Share in the Powhiri, our ancient ceremony of welcome before entering our pre-European Maori Village nestled within a native Tawa Forest. The village comes alive with sights, sounds & activity of days gone by including haka, poi, tattooing, weaving, carving and arts of warrior training. You will have the opportunity to participate in these activities. Witness the earth being scraped away from the hangi pit to reveal baskets of food cooked beneath the ground on hot stones. Enter the ancestral meeting house and enjoy a powerful cultural performance before dining the traditional hangi buffet feast!

We were on a motorhome tour with the camping and caravan club . There were 15 motor homes on the tour. We were staying on a campsite in Rotarua and were picked up by coach. The Maori welcome was brilliant. The Maori men came in a canoe. We watched as the baskets were dug up with our hangi inside. We... More

Great insight into Maori history and traditions, wrapped up in a very professional and fun package. Pick up from and return to your hotel is very welcome, fun 15-20 minute bus ride to the village. Bus drivers set the mood well - great combo of respect for Maori traditions and keen sense of humour which lasts all evening long. Village... More

Our driver, Aroha, was lots of fun. We learned all about the Maori culture and they did a great job of rotating the visitors around the different activities before the show and dinner. Be sure to call in advance to confirm where and when to meet, if you are driving to Rotorua yourself.

‘Entertaining education’ applies as well. Anyhow a real ‘must see’ when visiting Northern Island. The narration on the ride towards Tamaki Is very informative. The village itself is located at a splendid and very pleasant spot in the woods. The interactive performance is very entertaining while very informative as well. The visit is tipped off by a good native cooked... More
