Recently visited with a traveling friend. The Buried Village had various interesting displays of the preserved remnants from the Tarawera eruption. The ladies at reception were absolutely lovely and very helpful. The walk through the village was nice, with an option for a detour through the forest. Would highly recommend this track as you get to see gorgeous views of... More

Thank you for your visit and feedback. You obviously enjoyed every aspect of the Buried Village and even the clue hunt - we don't put an age restriction on that. Thank you also for your complimentary comment about the 'ladies at reception', it made their day. More

The story of the buried village is definitely interesting, and the museum at the enterance has a lot of information. unfortunately the walking route around the site shows much less than expected, only a few semi-buried houses, some recovered items, and some of the workshop tools. The walk down to the waterfall is nice and impressive, worth the 10 minute... More

I'm sorry to read that your expectations of the excavated village sites had not been quite met. The whares and European houses had been built from natural materials like ponga stems, raupo and timber which means that unfortunately over the years some of the excavations have started to deteriorate. However, I'm pleased that you enjoyed the museum and the waterfall... More

A great place to physically see history and the power of nature. The kids enjoyed the treasure hunt as did we. The staff dressed in period costume was a pleasant surprise. Very friendly and welcoming.

Thank you for you review. I'm pleased that you and your family had an enjoyable and perhaps memorable time visiting the Buried Village. Staff here dress in Victorian costumes like the visitors to the Pink and White Terraces back in the 1880's. It sets the scene for the history experience at the Buried Village. More

The buried village is a must see in New zealand. To see the houses and hotels uncovered from under so much dirt is incredible and very humbling. The atmosphere is so calming and and we felt honoured to be able to see this amazing place.

Thank you for your review. It certainly is very humbling when you stop and think about the very sad history of this area. In just a few short hours the peaceful village of Te Wairoa was devastated by the violent explosion of Mt Tarawera and Lake Rotomahana. Through the efforts of the Smith family this history has been kept alive,... More

Really enjoyed visiting the Buried Village it started with a very friendly lady serving us with our tickets. The exhibit has been well thought out and well written. It takes you on a journey of the story in a very easy to read but informative way. Well worth the money to enter.

This is what is left of the village of te wairoa after the 1886 eruption of mt tarawera. Excellent historic value. If you like seeing old artifacts and stuff you'll love it. It provides a good history of the time around the eruption. Sad if you stop and think about what happened that day. It is ok for wheelchairs but... More

Thanks for your review. We do appreciate the feedback. It is wonderful to visit a privately owned historic site. The museum sets the scene so that once you enter the excavated sites you have a good knowledge of the eruption in June 1886, and the events leading up to it. The magical walk alongside the Wairoa stream and the beautiful... More

We visited the Buried Village of Te Wairoa during our trip as a whole tour. The staff in the museum and attraction were attentive and tried to keep us engaged by telling us the whole story of what happened when the three volcanoes erupted one by one on the 10th of June, 1886. The mount Terawera explosion caused landscapes to... More
