You can explore all kinds of hot spring in the downtown park except for a red color ground with green hot water pool. Geyser is kind of artificial as it was activated with human means due to the recent earthquake changing the plate structure.

We visited this attraction on our way to Taupo. Got there just in time to see the geyser blow then transferred and paid to get in. Everything was better than the geyser. Wonderful sites here from bubbling mud to holes in the ground to spectacular colours. Took us nearly 3 hours on very well prepared tracks to see all. Really... More

We spent half day doing the Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland. It was well worth it. Fascinating to see the mud pools, the steam coming out of the ground here and there and the geysers. The walk is self-guided and you have facts presenter on small signs along the Walking track. We took a lot of photos. Do bring your camera! In... More

When my party suggested this Park; I was a little hesitant... it sounded like a lot of walking. But I decided to try it anyway - how often does one actually get to go thru a Geothermal park, right? Right... but oh how my legs ached after that. It was an amazing experience to see how amazing Mother Nature is... More

So, by this point in our trip, we had been rained on for days and were tired of the exorbitant price of NZ attractions. So here we are in Wai-O-Tapu, having driven in the rain and presented with the cost of admission... I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER WE PAID. This is one of the main reasons to go to Rotorua,... More

Such an interesting place to visit. A must see for those wanting to learn more about the geothermal activity in the area, or even for those just wanting a beautiful day out.

Trails take you to different areas of thermal color and wonder. Each are beautiful and unique. The sulphuric smell can be rough for those who are sensitive to odors but for the average person it is well worth a bit of stinkiness to see these amazing pools.
