ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington...

ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

I travelled here in my first day in NZ and was incredibly tired. This park was a brilliant way to spend a few hours like we did or days if you have time. The tour guide always incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. He was able to answer all questions we had and really enjoyed his job. This was a great introduction... More

Zealandia is an eco sanctuary. It is essentially a huge forest that they have surrounded with pest proof fences to keep out the rats and the possums. We did the short walk which took a couple of hours and saw a number of birds, insects and lizards. They have posts with information about the various animals but seem to have... More

Zealandia is much more than just another zoo. It does have guarded enclosures like those of the Kiwi, but the rest is open. The whole area is enclosed in a mesh fence to prevent predators to get into the sanctuary. Within the fenced area you will encounter both wildlife and indigenous flora in a beautiful, wild environment. Walking can become... More

I did this alone and didn't get much out of it other than a nice walk. I think it would have been much better if I did it with a tour to show what to look for. For a wildlife sanctuary I think I missed %95 of the wildlife as I couldn't see it or know where to look. Huge,... More

Zelandia is a Jurassic Park style protected world in which you can see New Zealand wildlife that isn't normally present in a city. Some of which is rare enough to be seldom seen in the wild. Outside of the paths, feeding posts and explanation boards, it's hard to know what is natural and what is modified for the animals. The... More

This is a very admirable project. Trying to fence off a piece of farmland and turn it back into pre-human New Zealand. They only have about five hundred years to go, if things go really well. But, in the meantime, they can try to educate the droves of visitors about the human impact on the environment. And they do. Great... More

We booked an evening tour and were expertly guided by Manuela and Tom. Armed with red-light torches we tramped through this remarkable sanctuary for two and a half hours which seemed to pass very quickly. We saw Wekas, Tuataras, Pied Shags roosting, a huge eel and one shy kiwi, not forgetting an army of glow worms which did a passable... More

Zealandia is a wonderful place full of birds, raptiles, bugs and local flora. I enjoyed that there were knowledgable people along the trails sharing information about what we can see at each different spot and curious bits about the animals. I want to return back for the night tour to experience the silk worms and a kiwi bird maybe? :-)... More

This is a wonderful project set up to provide a safe haven for New Zealand native animals. You could easily spend a whole day here enjoying the surroundings and spotting the locals. One of our highlights was when our volunteer guide, Colleen, gave us a signal to go quietly as she had spotted a tuatara! Watching the Takahe feed was... More

A brilliant example of rewilding and conservation. We went for two hours and saw loads of rare species and beautiful birds. You could easily spend a day here walking all of the trails and learning about the flora and fauna. They have a free shuttle from the top of the cable car too. Great day out!
