ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

I have always thought that Zealandia was for the tourists; but I was wrong ! I also thought that the cost of getting in was too high, so when I saw $9 tickets on a daily deal site I grabbed a couple. Today, in a...More

If New Zealand is to be predator free by 2050 it will be vital to get the buy in of New Zealanders. If all New Zealanders visited Zealandia to get an idea of how native life can flourish in the absence of cats, stoats, rats,...More

This is what conservation and captivity should be. It is an amazing place and one of the few places to see so many of the endemic and threatened species of New Zealand in one place. The walks were well maintained and the few enclosures that...More

ZEALANDIA was way beyond my expectations. It was a very lovely day, and I saw such a range of bird life that was also easy to photograph. The setting is pretty and you can easily spend a day or half-day wandering the very easy paths....More

Zealandia is one of my favourite places in Wellington, which I always suggest people get to if they can. I hadn't been for a while when my sister invited me to visit with her on a fine you-can't-beat-Wellington-on-a-good-day winter day, and we spent several hours...More

This was fantastic. I went in august which is the equivalent of winter here and there was still so many things alive and growing. There are different birds flying around but just as attractive were the forest paths and the streams throughout the area. I...More

Yes, you could still go if raining but would advise being dressed for the conditions as it is very much so being in nature. Expect that it will be muddy as well.

Wandering by yourself in the park should give you access to all of the same places, I think. About the kiwis: They are definitely only active at night, but if you don't want to go on an evening tour, you might want to try... More
