ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington...

ZEALANDIA is a heaven of tropical bliss right on the doorstep of Wellington City. Affectionately referred to as a hidden gem ZEALANDIA received international acclaim for the groundbreaking predator free 8.6km fence. Since the completion of the fence in 1999 ZEALANDIA has brought a number of native birds, reptiles and wildlife back from the brink of extinction where they now roam freely through the 225 hectare valley. A visit to ZEALANDIA is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and a must for anyone visiting Wellington. There are a number treks to saunter, suitable for any fitness level. Alternatively step back in time with our interactive exhibition center or take a load off at the atmospheric Rata Café.

Zealandia is a really worthwhile place to visit; it has been created from scratch in a few years by fencing off an area and clearing out pests and non native species. It's staggering how quickly the natural plants re-establish themselves. They have also introduced native animals and birds, which all seem to be thriving. Regrettably we had not given ourselves... Awesome surrounds and amazing to see rare birds up close. We paid extra for a guided tour and Roy was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. It was well worth it!

I joined one of the $55 tours which seemed to include admission (so I think it's only +$35 or so). The guide was super kind and knowledgeable. He took us out into the reserve for about 3 hours. My only complaint is likely not fair so take it with a grain of salt. The guide stopped often for what I... More

I came to Zealandia in the afternoon with my parents who were visiting me from Vancouver, Canada. We loved walking through the valley at our own speed and found the map of the sanctuary really easy to follow. We saw every kind of imaginable creature...tuatara, hihi, bellbirds, fantail, kaka, takahe, kakariki, it was amazing! We even saw a weta on... More

One of the highlights of our stay in Melbourne was our morning spent at Zealandia. Take the cable car from the town and there is a courtesy mini bus that takes you on a 5 minute ride to the Sanctuary. Genuine, honest & delightful people in Reception & Restaurant who all clearly care about what they are doing. Helen our... More

Spent a couple of hours wandering around the tracks, looking and listening out for birds. A nice way to take a break from the busyness of the city, only a few minutes drive from town.

We took the free shuttle from the civic centre. The van only holds about 10 people. The van comes about every hour. The drive to zealandia was about 20 minutes. Admission was $18 per adult. There are bathrooms and a cafe. The nature walk from the visitors centre to the upper dam bridge took about 45 minutes one way not... More

As a Wellingtonian I am very proud to have this amazing santcuary on our doorstep and visit as often as possible. The birdlife is simply incredible and I've often spotted kaka, kereru, tui, takahē, kākāriki (New Zealand parakeet), hihi (stitchbird), tieke (saddleback) and piwakawaka. You might also get lucky and see one of the Tuatara on your visit! I've seen... More

Walkways (some hilly) through forests and marshes. Wildlife, including the 22-year old takahe. Huge dam and swinging bridge along the way. You can go at your own pace and explore different tracks. There is a good info centre and cafe.
