We have walked and biked this easy grave road. Absolutely fantastic day out and magic on a beautiful day. Scenery is stunning of the south coast and south island. There are two lighthouses one at the end of the trail and other up a fairly step walking track which I understand was the first lighthouse in NZ. It well worth... More

We so enjoyed our tour passing through some delightful bays in route to Eastbourne. From there we proceeded along the spectacular unpaved coastal road to Pencarrow Station, one of the first sheep and cattle stations in the Wellington area. We saw along the way the oldest lighthouse in New Zealand. We passed a shipwreck and saw mussels coming up to... More

From Eastbourne to the Pencarrow lighthouse is a long walk but essentially level. The road is gated at Eastbourne. If you wish to have time and energy to walk the wonderful trails around the hills and lakes near the lighthouse then I recommend the excellent tour offered periodically by the Parks Department as they have access to the road and... We hired bikes from bike shed and cycled out to the 2 lighthouses. Took about 2.5 hours - easier there than back due to the wind! Beautiful views and a great way to spend some time outdoors. Plenty of people run or walk out as well.

We cycle this relatively often. Best on a still day. Gets very busy on weekends. Not good on a folding bike. Very fine for young families, interesting tracks also past the lighthouse around the lake. More or less flat. Best picnic area at ``The Pipes'' about half way in.

this path is great to walk on, bike on and push buggies or wheel chairs. the challenge is to be able to lift the chairs and buggies and bikes over the gate. you can easily walk through the opening in the side gate but getting anything through it is a squeeze. the path is wide and gravel and it goes... It's a lovely 7km walk/ride from the carpark to the lower lighthouse on a compact gravel road. A little further around will take you to Fitzroy Bay. Pack a picnic and spend the day on the south coast. Take a water bottle with you, as there is no place to fill one. It's also very exposed to the southerly -... More

Whether it be by bike or by foot, the coastal trail around to the Pencarrow lighthouse is a great activity just out of Wellington. Even on an overcast day, it's still a great activity to take in the dramatic hillsides right next to the ocean and then get right out around to the Lighthouse. Even though it's only across the...
