The highlight to any visit to Wellington is a trip on Wellington Cable Car. In just 5 minutes you will reach the top of the Botanic Garden where panoramic views of the city and harbour are the reward. You can also visit the Space Place Observatory here. Before you head back down make sure to visit the Cable Car Museum (free entry), which provides a history of the city's symbolic mode of transport and see the original cars and winding machinery on display. There are walking tracks that start at the top of the Cable Car if you're keen on a stroll back to the city. The Cable Cars leave every 10 minutes.

Beautiful cable car with the shortest trip I've ever had to a viewing point! Lovely views but not much else, we tried to do one of the walks in the adjacent botanic garden but it was so poorly marked we gave up!More

Short and sweet is a pretty apt considering the ride takes only about 4 minutes and the views from the lookout is just awesome on a sunny day. We know the Wellington Botanic Garden is always looking for ways to improve the signage for their...More

Don't buy a return ,unless you have difficulty walking, because it is only a short walk back down the hill again, through the beautiful gardens. The top café has free wifi and a perfumery to ponder. Such a short journey!!!!More

Hi there, the cable car is heavily used by commuters from Kelburn; by Victoria University students and by travelers going to the Wellington Botanic Garden and to other tourist attractions. And as you've mentioned if you have time and the weather is good, it is...More

Its a short ride and doesnt offer anything too exciting, but a great way to get to the gardens. Return tickets are reasonably priced but the walk back to town from gardens is lovely.More

Yes the Cable Car provides a convenient link between the city centre and Kelburn suburb and Botanic Garden. It is only a short ride up and that leaves you plenty of time to wander back down to the city, especially lovely on a sunny day....More

Great fun on the old cable car. The museum is really interesting. Walk over to the Space Place observatory. It is incredibly well thought out & very interactive. Stay for the hourly Planetarium shows - quite amazing!!

That's a great plan Amanda! It's definitely worth planning ahead if you've got a couple of places you want to visit at the summit.

You have to do this every time you visit Wellington! The addition of the lights in the tunnels is really cool.

As recommended in many publications, we rode the Wellington Cable Car. It is a brief (few minutes) ride to an elevated spot in the city. The ride is smooth and fun. The views are nice. There are several paths you can walk once off the...More

Hi there, thanks for visiting. The views from the top of the Cable car is definitely worth the short ride up, saves you from having to climb up the hill. And as you've mentioned once you're there you have easy access to the Botanic Garden...More

we travelled on the cable car to enable us to walk down through the gardens back to the city. The cable car is a modern car, but at the top , in Kelburn, there is a small museum housing the original type of car.

A visit to the Cable Car Museum is a must! It gives you the opportunity to sit aboard the original 1900 carriage.

We used the cable car during our stay in Wellington and found it a very relaxed, enjoyable means of getting to the wonderful views of Wellington that lie at the top of the mountain.

As a NZ resident I was able to use my seniors gold card. You can take the car back down or walk, or even catch a bus at the top back to the city. It's certainly very cheap and well worth the trip to the top.
