Headed for a visit early evening during the week. Caught the sunshine and had a lovely walk along the beach. Enjoyed watching the world go by and watching all the planes take off and land. Worth wandering along to see the 'middle of middle earth' sign. Seems a good spot to walk your dogs. Just chill out for a while... More

Close to the airport, Lyall Bay has cafes and kids playgrounds and you can watch planes takeoff and land at Wellington airport from the beach. Close to the airport retail precinct as well for shopping, and Bunnings nearby.

We stayed in the Lyall Bay area and were pleasantly surprised that there is a nice walk along the bay. It is very scenic and even though we did not see any surfers on the days we took our walks we did see kite surfers.

Lyall Bay is a sandy beach and close to Wellington airport and the CBD. It has smooth surface, small to medium surf and does not drop off which is why it is popular with surfers and body borders learning to surf or body board. Surf breaks are at the eastern (airport) end where there is also a sea wall which... More

Was a great cheap way to entertain my sisters kids! The beach is long, with a section especially for dogs. They run big events there as well, as on this occasion it was the day before the big 'Capital Ocean Swim', so all the floating markers had been positioned out on the water. Being right next to the airport, you... More

If you are a surfer this is the place to go. For me the joy is walking a long beach, watching lots of families, friends, and their dogs just taking the air, using the play ground, eating fish and chips on the beach, runners, walkers, wind surfers and kite surfers. This is not the upmarket world of oriental bay and... More

Don't leave Wellington without doing a scenic drive around the coast through Lyall Bay. Lovely views of the coast. Stop at a waterside cafe.

This is a good spot to watch all the surfers. Lots of people bring their dogs to play here as well. There are some really good restaurants nearby and the beach is easy to stroll on.

Worthwhile including on your tour of Wellington and its immediate surrounds. Nice peached, clear views south, all amidst a taste of NZ suburbia.

Really the greatest beach in Wellington for surfing, dog walks , kayaking or plane spotting. You know when you live at a great place when weekends are flooded by tourists.
