We were priviledged to spend 3 days over Waitangi Weekend at Okain's Bay and We enjoyed the Waitangi Day Celebrations there at the Museum.. We were stunned to find so many high quality exhibits at the Museum and the grounds are quite large too. There were just so many examples from early Maori and the early European Settlers time from... Visited here on a drive from Akaroa to Christchurch after seeing some leaflets. It is a bit off the beaten track but its a beautiful drive along a windy road but stunning views. The little village/hamlet of Okains Bay is delightful, there is a small cafe and a fantastic beach with fantastic views. The museum is well maintained, suprisingly well... More

A real surprise, a long way from anywhere, but worth a visit and a walk/drive around the bays. About 20 minutes rive from Akaroa.

Well worth heading out of the way for. There is so much to see here, with relocated buildings of interest, Maori artifacts, information about the first settlers in Okains bay and early settler life. A real insight into the lives they led and I'm so glad that someone had the presence of mind to save all of it and collate... More

Wow this museum is simply amazing and the thought and work that has gone in to it is incredible. A whole building full of Maori wakas (long boats) where else would you see this? The history is jam packed in to this amazing museum and has to be seen to be believed. DO NOT MISS this place and take a... More

We visited on a rather wet & gloomy day & found plenty to interest us. We especially liked the resited homes & buildings from the time of the early settlers & learning about their lives, also enjoyed the Maori artefacts.

This is a hidden gem. A fantastic display of moari artifacts and colonial displays. A very small entry fee and well worth it. You do need a car to get there.

This museum houses an amazing, but sadly haphazard collection of early (pre-colonial) maori artefacts as well as a motley assortment of stuffed birds & colonial bric-a-brac. Good for browsing on a rainy day.

Innumerable tools, photos, fishing and farming implements, historic buildings, Maori canoes, early European settlers accoutrements, Maori and settlers clothing to name a few of the displays. The quality of the things is amazing. It's certainly worth a day trip as the scenery and drive are unforgettable.
