It's crazy this place is still shut, but one part isn't. We came just to see the tuatara. Park at the front, and wander around the back, and all these beautiful dinosaurs were out on display to be seen through the window, including Henry who must be nearly a million years old now (actually, over110!) There were about five or six tuatara out of their sleeping areas, looking like statues, and you only have to use a little bit of imagination to know that you are looking at something special. Definitely worth the visit.

Closed due to building issues. No warning. Nothing in Info centres etc. Disappointed. Had to write all this as TripAdvisor wouldn’t allow review that just said closed

The museum was not open, but we went to see the Tuatara. These can be viewed at the back of the building. We could clearly see about seven tuatara in their enclosures inside the building. Free to view and just amazing to see these incredible animals.

Housed in a big white pyramid,Invercargill’s cultural hub is a flood of natural and human history, maritime exploits. But its the 116 year old tuatara, NZ’s unique lizard-like reptiles that stars here.

Don’t get excited about this one!
Signs say it is permanently closed and I can confirm this.
There are Tuatara visible through the back windows. They look very lonely.

So disappointing - we had visited previously and wanted to go again as had very positive memories of the displays etc.
Shut due to concerns about the building being able to withstand an earthquake. I hope the tuataras are ok.

The museum is closed currently because of an earthquake risk so very disappointed. They have a great Antartica expedition. Though closed you can still see the Tuataras from the outside

I grew up in Invercargill and visited regularly then as a kid and a number of times since. It is a fantastic museum. Sadly it is closed now and Invercargill has lost one of its real assets.

Museum no longer operating, was a world class museum when it was open, its a pity that the Invercargill city council closed it down.

was good enough, but could have been much better with so many things for children to learn about science and the world. Cafe was a bit dull. Before it closed it was the only FREE wet weather venue in Invercargill
