The Bunkhouse Theatre shows a quirky 40minute film about Stewart Island,...

The Bunkhouse Theatre shows a quirky 40minute film about Stewart Island, titled A LOCAL'S TAIL. A Local's Tail introduces local characters, community colour, and the struggles and triumphs of the island pioneers, both past and present. Producers, Pete Davis and Penny Golias, hope to answer the myriad of questions that holiday makers have about the 'why' and 'how' of Stewart Island, from the most reliable of all sources - the pub (or more accurately, from the yarns overheard at the pub by a local dog). The film shows everyday throughout the summer. See the board outside for daily session times.

The theatre is small, but the seats are comfortable and all have good views of the screen. Although they show other movies, the main attraction, I believe, is the movie "A Local's Tail." It tells the story of Stewart Island thru the eyes and voice of a dog. It's charming, amusing, and a must for anyone visiting the island!

To be honest you had me at dogs but what a cutie! Before the film we got to pat the sleepy dog and then she rang the bell!! SHE RANG THE BELL multiple times to tell us it was movie time! II slipped a few coins in her piggy bank which is for toys <3 The film was great. We... More

We went to see A Dog's Tail, a film about the history of the island. It was charming and funny, and as an added bonus we met the star of the film

We waited to the end of our stay to visit the Bunkhouse and for us it bought the trip together. Meeting the star Lola was good too, she is a calm role model for Staffordshire terriers who sometimes get a bad name. The islanders are welcoming and open, they share themselves with joy. Great to meet some of them, and... More

The film was ok, a bit over the top. I loved the dog, Lola, so good looking. I congratulate Lola's mum and dad on dreaming up the concept. It's a good idea to document the island's history and there was quite a big audience for the movie the afternoon we went. Was impressed with the theatre itself, much more plush... More

We watched the history of Stewart island video which was very interesting. Also the dog that rings the bell to summon patrons in was quaint.

Promoted as being told through the eyes of Lola, a gorgeous blue Staffy, the highlight was actually meeting her. The movie does give you a sense of the Island and its history. I found it over the top, stretching the truth in an attempt at humour that didn't quite land. The historical footage became disjointed when interspersed with Lola's grinning... More
