The fort was built in the nineteenth century to defend against invasion from Russia, which understandably never came, although it appears to have been on war footing pretty much ever since. However, it did come under fire from a Japanese submarine during WW11, the only part of the Australian mainland ever to have done so. It is staffed by a... More

Spent about an hour here looking around. Entry is free and you can get a fantastic view of all around you. You are able to pay for a tour of the tunnels I believe but did not do this on this occasion. Few rooms open like a room set up as an officers room. Staff are helpful. Nice place to... More

A tour of the Fort and its underground tunnels will be an eye opener to many Australians. The tour is conducted by dedicated volunteers who explain very well the workings of the Fort. The cost is quite minimal.

A beautiful view from this Australian World War I and II Fort with a great tribute to a fallen Australian Military Hero of the War on Terrorism in Afghanistan. There is a bench for resting and taking in the sights on the top hill of the fort. It is dedicated to the memory of Beau Edward Pridue, The Australian Army... More

If the fort itself is not so interesting, the location is perfect to see the Newcastke beach, the light house, the city and the cathedral. We were lucky to be there at night for the annual concert, amazing sunset above the harbor! At the end of the concert the canoons were activated like if the Russians just arrived on the... More

I came here with no expectations not knowing what to expect. We were greeted by a tour guide who offered to take us through the tunnels for $12.50 per adult. It was great value for money as it is not usually accessible by the public. The tour guide Ian was very knowledgeable and passionate about this site and made it... More

I paid a fleeting visit to this fort when I travelled through the area in January. I'm a huge fan of military history so this place was high up on my list though as I was travelling from the Hunter Valley by bus and was only staying in town for one night I had literally less than half an hour...
