We walked listening to the birdsong in the peaceful atmosphere over sweeping lawns past a magnificent Hoop pine planted in 1900, past a huge evergreen magnolia and other old trees, round the historic Clark homestead where there was a clear view to the sea and Whangarei Heads - it was easy to imagine gracious garden parties a few generations back.... We didn't really take advantage of everything this place had to offer as we really only wanted to see a Kiwi. We did! The viewing set was good and we got an excellent look at a kiwi from about 2 metres. Great moment.

A wonderful asset to the local community. Friendly approachable and warm staff gave us the best intro, and we saw two happy quiet kiwis. And a tuatara, too! The staff clearly know their stuff and enjoy sharing their knowledge. If you're patient and quiet you'll be rewarded with a sight of a kiwi. The local geckos are cute too. Well... More

At this site there is a kiwi house where you can see live kiwi birds in a darkened enclosure. There is also a heritage center with model- and live size railways and a museum. Good place to spend a few hours also for kids.

Visited several areas with signs that indicate there were kiwis however because they like the dark and burrow, this place was where we actually saw one kiwi and the activity of another. No great pictures because it was dark however would could see the one quite clearly.

The staff was very friendly and explained interesting facts about the kiwis. The Kiwi cage was very good prepared for taking photos of the kiwis and have a look on them. Also the cage was very natural. It even rains 2 times a week. The rest of the museum was a little bit to small and with less objects, but... More

We arrived at 10:30am (30 mins after opening) and were surprised to find we were the first visitors. After receiving a warm welcome and 10 minute briefing on the lay out and info on the 11 am feeding of the kiwis we proceeded into the dark hallway to see the kiwis. At the scheduled feeding the kiwi care taker came... More

Staff were very well informed and provided education without being pushy. We were there for kiwi feeding time and the beautiful big birds were just a meter away; the closest I've ever seen them. Other creatures were also very viewable. I spent quite a lot of time in the well laid-out museum too. Plus, you could circle back into the... More

Excellent views into the past and present. Neat collection of town history with a connection to nowadays. Find yourself in this and how it all fitted in with the old settlers. Then see the Kiwis and love them.

Kiwi North was lots of fun - the lovely lady at the front reception explained to us all about the amazing kiwi bird and its anatomy and then directed us through to the geckos and kiwis! You have to be patient and quiet, but you'll almost definitely get the chance to see an adorable flightless bird. We also checked out... More
