It was a great half-day activity with the Bonz 'N Stonz Team, thank you for that! They were really nice, always ready to help and to explain. We were 3 friends and everybody decided for another material: jade, bone and shell, but we have all the same opinion: We enjoyed our time there and we recommend highly to do your own carvings in Hokitika with these... This is a really authentic jade shop. When we walked in the owner had just returned with a huge piece of greenstone he had found in the river the day before. He then showed us how he tests it for quality. I bought a lovely jade necklace very reasonably priced. All the staff are so friendly and knowledgeable. Had we... More

Come with a design/idea and they can help you develop it into reality! Steve was SUPER HELPFUL and patient. Thank you!! I designed a man doing yoga under a tree and, after spending almost 6 hours on it, it broke during the polishing phase. He offered to allow us to stay late and make a second one! I was very... More

Wow what an experience! I am maori from the far north and have been blessed to have stumbled across this place. I dont think you will find a place like this anywhere in NZ. The knowledge and appreciation Steve and his team (i would say family) have for pounamu (jade) is amazing. In one day we have learnt more about... More

We visited here after a recommendation. It was raining the day we went and a great place to while away the day creating our own unique piece of Jewellery to take home. Steve was patient and an excellent tutor, meaning we both left with pieces of Pounamu to be proud off. Far better than going to any of the other... More

We read about Steve's amazing little shop and workshop here on TripAdvisor, so the night before the kids (16yo, 12yo and 9yo) went down to the beach (in the standard West Coast rain!) and picked up Greenstone (Jade) for their experience the next day. Steve is an absolute gentleman, and a kind and patient mentor with the children. He is... More

Our day with Steve carving pounami far exceeded any expectations we arrived with. Us was myself and two children aged 11 and 12. Steve was warm, welcoming and wise, bringing a richness to the experience well beyond the carving itself. Steve is a very experienced(30+ years) tutor, and brings with it all the patience, humility and respect for those he... More

It was raining in Hokitika (and pretty much everywhere else on the west coast) and we saw something about carving your own jade on the little tourist tv program at the hotel. We asked our front desk receptionist and she pointed us to Bonz 'N Stonz. It's a stonz (ha) throw away from the clock and just a little unassuming... More

Steve has this way with people, it''s almost impossible to describe. He is the kind of teacher that gets the best out of each person that step into his workshop. By giving us full control over every steps of the way and simply guiding our hands in the right direction, we ended with the most unique jade necklace that truly... More

We had the best time designing, carving and finishing our items at Bonz n Stonz. This was the perfect way to spend a cold wet day and we got to experience how much effort goes into each piece. We ended up with two Bone and one Jade designs that turned out so much better than we had hoped! Steve was... More
