Kaikoura Helicopters is the only helicopter company in the spectacular Kaikoura region. In this region the mountains literally meet the sea. The sea is abundant with marine life and is the reason why the mighty Sperm whale roams the area feeding on fish and giant squid. The best way to view this majestic animal is by the air and the helicopter offers uninterrupted viewing of the whole animal from head to tail. Then fly from the turquoise blue ocean up to some of the highest mountain peaks in New Zealand. In a matter of minutes you can be walking in the snow on the peak of a mountain, this is incredible and really feels like being on top of the world. An amazing “must do” experience while visiting New Zealand.

We called Kaikoura Helicopters. Lots of options. Its a 4 seater chopper. You an choose with 4 or with just the two of us. We don’t mind flying with 4 so we took that option. After the safety briefing comes a good explanation about whales, delphin and the aftermath of the November 2016 earthquake. Then into the chopper, its breezy... More

They have friendly staff and you can use the AA traveller voucher to get the price down to 245NZD for a 40min flight. The pilot had good routine and found the sperm whale quick after 8min and we spend 8min to fly around the whale BUT honestly the whale seems tiny and could be a submarine, too. You don't get... We went to book the Whale Watch cruise only to find they're fully booked weeks ahead. This is because post-earthquake they only have one boat sailing three times a day instead of six boats hourly. Hence we opted for the helicopter tour and it's a great way to do it. They have up to the minute info on where the... More

Thank you Pete for paying attention to the whales and their habits! We saw two sperm whales and had several minutes to take photos before they dived down again. Then the trip to Mount Fyffe was amazing, we could see all the way to the North Island. Really spectacular experience.

I absolutely loved this experience and would recommend it to everyone. It was also cheaper than I had expected because I was able to jump in with another couple. The views of the Kaikoura peninsula are just breathtaking and the ariel view of the wales gives you a real sense of the sheer size of these amazing creatures. 10/10 Would... More

Had intended to go whale watching by boat but it was full so looked further and saw the helicopter flight. I was a little dubious as it isn't cheap and I'm very scared off heights but Chelsea was very helpful and reassuring, explaining the whole process. Peter our pilot was very informative, they plot the whales movements so they can... More

Myself and my two friends are from Ireland and we're spending our last day of holidays in kaikoura. We were leaving for the ferry in the afternoon so did not have much time in kaikoura! The boat would take too long and the airplane was too windy to go up on the tour. By chance we spotted the helicopter and... More

We decided on the spur of the moment to do this. The pilots were really helpful and advised us the Whale hadn't been seen for a few hours so suggested we hold off on our flight until it had been located again. Aaron the phoned us later in the afternoon to say it had been spotted and what time was... More

The trip was good, staff were friendly but unfortunately no Whales were seen. Normally the boats go our and listen with their hydrophones for the Whales and can guide you to the right area but on the day we went out the weather was too rough so the boats didn't go out. With a bit of spray (lots of white... More
