Sensational view!

The 360* views are well worth the steep walk or drive up to this historic site of the Flagstaff which commemorates signing the Treaty of Waitangi.

Great to learn about the history of the area and the views are to die for. A must see as it offers views accross the Bay of Islands. Breathtaking.

We took the ferry over from Paihia, a short ride by catamaran and spent a very pleasant morning exploring this historical town. The walk up to Flagstaff Hill was worth the effort for the great views it provides over the town and surrounding areas, as well as towards Paihia and Waitangi.

Flagstaff Hill is well known to all Kiwis as we are taught about Hone Heke ordering the cutting down the flagstaff here - the story is at the base of what is left of the flagstaff, which has been lowered a few times!! The view is fantastic and as this site is very close to the Russell township, there isn't... More

It is well worth visiting Flagstaff Hill while you are in Russell. It offers the most superb views in every direction in a most tranquil setting. Very close by is a small nature reserve. A five minute walk into the reserve resulting in my hearing more different, enchanting birdsong than anywhere else I have visited in NZ. At 6pm it... More

We were in Russell at the beginning of springtime, so not really beach weather but the walk up to Flagstaff Hill was a great way to spend the afternoon, nice circular walk that you can choose to extend and go over to another bay

Walking to flagstaff hill is a bit of a pull (you can drive) but it's worth it. On a fine day you can see far out across the Bay of Islands with a fine view of Russell Harbour. When we were there a Weka was wandering around happy to allow photos.

A good location for scenery and a view of the area from a high location. Would recommend this location to appreciate the beauty of New Zealand and the landscapes that are available to see.

Up a steep hill from edge of Russell town. Drive if you are able unless super fit. When you get to the top the is a sharp turn to the left and up again. Parking available. Great views over Russell & the Bay of Islands. No amenities.

Not that the climb was difficult, and no one with the use of their legs should be deterred. The view from the top was excellent, and it felt historic to stand at the site of the flagstaff battle. Read up on this dispute before you climb up there. As you stand on top of the hill, look across to Waitangi,... More
