Discovery Bay near Albany is a truly unique attraction.

It is home to Australia's last operating Whaling Station, a stunning Botanic Garden of Australian plants and a display offering visitors a close up experience with friendly Australian Wildlife.

You can choose to explore either our whaling history, or the gardens and wildlife, or the entire site to make a real day of it! Pack a picnic or BBQ lunch and spend a day discovering lots you didn't know about the Great Southern region.

Situated at the tip of the Flinders Peninsula, the heritage-listed "Whale World" site has undergone dramatic change since 2004. Now maximising its location, Discovery Bay is a showcase of amazing regional bio-diversity, yet still remains true to the original whaling display.

Historic Whaling Station guided tours are included with admission, while informative displays are provided to enjoy the gardens and wildlife at your own pace.

We spent an enjoyable afternoon looking around this Historic place. We had not realised that whaling had ended so recently. Would love to have had more time there.

Hi Michael Thank you for your 5 star review. We especially love seeing that people have left our site with a new understanding of Albany (and indeed Australia's) whaling industry. Maybe if you are ever back in Albany you can enjoy a longer look around our whaling station, there certainly is lots to take in. More

What a way to learn about an extinct industry. Keeps you occupied for hours with great displays and a magnificent view over the harbour.

Gained a very good insight into the whaling industry from this well thought out and presented museum. From the old whale chaser to the sheds and artefacts it is well worth the visit.

Hi Vaughan Thanks for your great review! We believe our displays are well worth a visit too, and we have put a lot of effort over the years into how things are presented on site. Thank you for recognising these efforts. More

Whale World is an amazing look into a industry which was so important up until the 1970s. It is a great way to teach new generations why whaling needed to stop but without denying its past importance to WA. The people who did this job were incredible characters who left a indelible mark on Albany.

We spent 2-3 hours in this museum with our 5 & 8 y.o. children after spending 1 hour at the animal park just above (I recommend visiting both). Not only is this museum very well done, but the guide really brought it to life very well and the fact that it's in its original location, on the windy shores makes... More

Hi Thomas Thank you for your visit and for taking the time to review your experience. I'm sorry you didn't see many of our animals, they sometimes hide in the heat of the day. Our whaling history is very interesting, people love the skeletons as you have said and we are glad to see you describing your day here as... More

We were given a guided tour of the facility by a volunteer guide which was very informative. We were then left to move around the grounds at our leisure to look at the displays of old equipment and the whaling ship which is dry docked there.

Hi Trevor Pleased to read that you enjoyed your tour of the processing factory, our guides work very hard on their presentations and it is always great to hear that visitors gain a lot from them. We have many visitors report that the Cheynes IV is their favourite part of the visit, it certainly is an interesting ship. Thank you... More

The whaling ship was the highlight. The skeletons were also impressive. Also visited the wildlife park but skipped the gardens as we were advised there was not much in bloom.

Hello Thank you for your review and recommendation to others that we are a 'must see' attraction while in Albany. We really appreciate it. Fairly pricey to go do the whole hulk but did it anyway with the kids, could be a bit dangerous for toddlers that don't listen but we had one listen and one was being carried. The kids loved the whaling ship, movies, skeletons and whale slide. I loved the whole lot. We also paid for the gardens and wildlife park... More

Hi Garret Visiting the animals in the morning is sometimes better but it really does depend on the weather - it is the warm sun that makes them sleepy and trying to hide themselves away. Pleased to see that you found it enjoyable with your younger kids, yes it can be difficult being a former industrial site but we try... More
