The objects of the celars (statues, paintings, documents, past newspares, literature magazines etc) are being exhibited unrandomly without any reference to contemporary museological concepts. So being there with my 5 old child was a constant abstraction of her in order not to touch or break sth. The upper floors (salon, rooms etc) have the main ethological staff together with rare books and temples of christian orthdoxy's churches and so.
Nevertheless the people (2 men and a lady) that guide us where very kind and answered to every question without being abstracted by my child chasing their dog (surealistic)! Their personal contribution to the reservation of this important treasure is monumental!

The musuem is overstocked with items. It is really best to take a guided tour (costs a few euros more) so you get an underastnding of the infinite line of exhibits. Allow time afterwards to return on your own to study particulars that intersets you. In my opinion is a must visit, showing so many traditional items.

I didn't intend to visit The Faltaits Historical and Folklore Museum during my trip to Skyros, but when I bumped into Nikos who was at the church near the museum, he invited me to visit it. I'm glad I did, even if I only got to see a few rooms of the museum (they were cleaning it in preparation for the festival this coming week), I was impressed with the collection inside. Don't miss this gem in Skyros Town!

A few meters from the monument erected to honor the English poet Rupert Brooks, on the rocky hill overlooking sea and shore is the renounced Faltaïts private collection. The winter visitor who rings the bell is thrilled to be welcomed by the noble lady herself whose deceased husband, the painter, writer, journalist and collector Manos Faltaïts transformed the mansion to this arc of Skyros island and Greek history and folklore. The thousands of things to admire include pottery and other rural life items of the past, paintings, embroidery (look for the various symbolic designs on marital bed sheets), books, local costumes, documents, examples of the famous SKYROS carved furniture. You need at least 90 minutes if you follow the enthusiastic guide, whose devotion to the Faltaïts cause reveal the originality and special value of this “treasure island”.
Tips: 1 visits at limited hours, give them a ring, 2 small entrance fee, 3 small gift shop, 4 excellent view, 5 narrow staircases make impossible the access to those with walking difficulties, 6 no photos allowed.

Don’t expect glass cases and dull scholarly labels. Instead look forward to an eclectic array of objects collected by 1 man and added to by a few others.

Make sure you go round with one of the guides who add even more colours to the kaleidoscope of things on display.

I took a guided tour of the museum and was really impressed with his work, albeit at times a bit eccentric. However, he was known to be very interested in assisting the local people in maintaining their educational standard by donating books to the town, as well as his claim of reading every single book in his library. A must see on the island.

This is a private museum belonging to the Faltaits family showing much of the way Greeks, including Skyrians, lived a century and more ago. What strikes the visitor is the richness of the exhibits in this museum and the difference between it and most of the rest. Museums usually have large halls and are almost empty. This one has so many exhibits in every room that they are everywhere, from the floors to the ceilings - but aesthetically arranged. A must visit when staying on the island of Skyros.
