Breathtaking views

Stunning views of Maui from a higher perspective. This hike is rather labor intensive… especially at the beginning! Unfortunately when we hiked it was later in the afternoon and the clouds covered most of the view from the top of the trail. There is a nice picnic area at the top/end of the trail that would make a great spot to eat lunch.

Best Trial in Maui
Jul 2021
Just came back from the trail a couple of days ago. I would rate it so far the best in Maui, better than Pipiwai trail. We climbed to the top of the mountain and was surrounded by the cloud. The trial was long and steep but was worth to go. The view was beautiful. BTW, there was another trial called Thirteen Crossing nearby. It is definitely a half day itinerary.

Amazing view
Jun 2021
Amazing views throughout the hike. The initial ascent was difficult but doable even for our 5 year old. We arrived early (7:30am) to park at the trail head, otherwise it is another 1+ mile of ascent from the overflow parking. It also gets super hot with majority of the trails not having any shade, so dress appropriately and bring lots of water. The trail downhill is slippery with sand and gravels even on a dry day, so avoid rainy days, it is probably too dangerous downhill with mud.

Beautiful Ridge Views, Steep Climb
Jun 2021
Limited parking but there is overflow parking. Initial hike is long and steep. Stop often to catch your breath as needed. Bring water. Views are terrific. As you get higher, the temperature cools down a bit. Best to go early in the day, especially during summer.

Beautiful views. Awesome hike!

Awesome hike with great views! 1650 feet of elevation gain to the top. Our GPS tracked it at 4 1/2 miles round trip. Parking lot fills up and the overflow parking would add a lot more elevation and distance. (I think I read 0.8 miles from main parking lot but it’s all uphill). It was dry when we did it but if the trail was wet and muddy I’m sure it would be extremely slippery.

Hard work. Worth the effort.

I hiked this trail in June with my husband. The views along the whole trail were spectacular and there is a variety of different micro ecosystems as you go along so the view is always changing. The trail was dry when we went, maybe it was the season or maybe it was luck. There are stairs and wood boards along some parts of the path presumably to get people through the worst of the mud.

We arrived at the trail around 9:30 a.m and kept driving past the first parking lot to the lot closer to the trail head. (Otherwise you hike about a mile up along the road) The lot was full but there was a steady stream of people coming down as others went up, so we just pulled to the side and waited a couple minutes for someone to leave. There were two porta-johns at the upper lot. On the day we went they were out of toilet paper and had no hand sanitizer.

My husband and I are both fairly fit. It took us two hours and 20 minutes to complete the full out and back from the trail head. With plenty of stops for photos. The first 1/8 to 1/4 mile is a steep paved cement ramp. It was the most difficult part of the whole hike just because of the persistent grade uphill. Once you get past that, the hills are more rolling and there are plenty of overlooks to take a break and check out the scenery.

Really great trail, beautiful vistas

I did this hike on my 60th birthday and I recommend it to everyone. There is effort involved in getting up the hill, so it is not for the feint of hart, but the views are amazing. Recommendations: take water, wipe your feet as you start the hike (there is a shoe brushing station), park in the upper lot, it’s better to sit and wait for someone to leave. We started from the lot at the bottom and had expended a lot of energy before we started the trail.

Ideal start 7:30a.m.

This is a rather quick ascent of a hike so it's best to arrive early to avoid the crowds (it is shockingly popular) and ascend while it's still relatively cool prior to 9a.m. You also want to be able to get to the summit when the skies are clear, before the daily storm clouds begin to roll in in the afternoon.

Worth it!

Absolutely loved this trail. BEAUTIFUL views on the way up and down. I'm 40 and my wife is 33. We are in decent shape but not regular hikers. It was a little challenging but we managed to do the whole thing in a little over 2 hours with photo stops and a few rest breaks. There was a bit of mud and I'd definitely encourage hiking boots or something with some good grip. The way down was pretty slippery and I almost fell several times. Absolutely beautiful though and really really glad we did it. Aloha!

A rainy day but still beautiful
Feb 2021 • Couples
We went without the proper gears - as a matter of fact my Nike shoes kept slipping on the muddy road. The last .5 mile was hard, on both way up and down. We couldn’t see much after the cloud and rain moved in but we still can imagine in a sunny day it could be beautiful. Hubby asked me if I want to hike again, yes but probably in a dry season.
