An ornate church with a large cupola dome and detailed frescos. Behind the alter is a highly decorated curved apse with a cross, a large number of statues and rays of sunlight that radiate from a point in the sky where a dove is located. Beautiful.

With its gleaming, 40-meter green cupola peeping above the roofline of Prague’s Staré Město (Old Town), the Neo-Classical church of St Francis of Assisi was designed by Burgundian architect Jean-Baptiste Mathey and consecrated in 1688. Steps away from the city’s iconic Charles Bridge, it replaced the original Franciscan church built in 1270.

My son went to Assisi many years ago and raved about it so much so he inspired me to go and visit. I learnt a lot about St Francis when studying the medieval church on my degree course many years ago. I was always interested in pursuing my dream of one day going to Assisi and I can tell you... Musical Prague. Music in Prague is so easy to find. There are so many different opportunities to take in a concert. The concert halls that are filled with tourists and locals usually require more planning. Concert in church can often be much more spontaneous decision. The St. Francis of Assisi Church is a beautiful Catholic church with a unique baroque... More

The church is at the foot of the Charles Bridge on the Stare Mesto side. I came to the church for the specific purpose of attending an evening concert. The performers were excellent, Organist, Violinist, Soprano, with a mix of solo, duo and trio pieces. Naturally many of the pieces selected were religious. The final one was an exquisite presentation... More

We decided to go for a concert while in Prague and selected the concert they had in this church. What an experience, the sound in this church is amazing and the church is beautiful to be in while music like Ave Marie is played.. Great experience..

A nice big green copper dome church right beside Charles Bridge and Knight of the Cross square, it isn’t hard to miss. The exterior is not that attractive, but the interior is stunning with marble statues, fabulous paintings, beautiful ornaments at the altar and the painting of The Last Judgment on the dome. All these are worth to go in... More

Neighbourhood Profile
Stare Mesto (Old Town)
One of the oldest neighbourhoods in town represents the medieval heart of Prague. It’s no surprise it is bustling with tourists every time of day. Križovnický square, overlooking Charles Bridge with Prague Castle in the background, is probably the most beautiful square in the city. Its unique historical atmosphere of gothic houses and churches, cobblestone streets and squares, and stone towers blend together with the modern era. A vast array of bars, restaurants, dance clubs, international brand shops, galleries and hotels bring life to the old city. With its charming and picturesque cobblestone streets, the nightlife and parties will surely be unforgettable.
