An inconspicuous city at first glance, but in fact a beautiful piece of history and the present. Our Hungarian trip started there. We're staying just for two nights and we're sure, that it's not enough to visit everything we'd like to see.
First day we spent there, our walk trough the town was full of surprises.
I mean the prices of entrance fees, for example, to the observation tower was really low.
There are so many restaurants, pubs and bars to visit. Also mamy ice-cream offers! This city is picturesque and cozy. Ideal for visits with family, friends or couples.
Sightseeing is an activity for whole evening there.
And if you're tired of towns, all around the city are many natural monuments, chateaux, castles, forests, churches, viewpoints and a lake.

We love walking around old town Sopron. Highly recommend going up in the Fire Tower, visiting the various churches, eating the local food, going into the grocery on the ring around the Old Town, seeing the old Roman Ruins, going in Dec. so you can see the Christmas Market. It's all fun and interesting, like stepping back in time.

A jewel box on the edge of western Hungary, right on the Austrian-Hungarian border, a bicycle ride away from Eisenstadt, the capital of Burgenland. The old town is just beautiful, rather small, easy to see everything in a day, and still relax and have a nice dinner. Local wine is excellent. The birthplace of Franz (Ferenc) Liszt is a short ride away (now in Austria). Alexandre Lamfalussy, the father of the euro, lived and went to high school in Sopron. Do you need any more reason to take a small detour if you visit Vienna or Budapest? If so, check out the bike routes around the Neusiedler See (Fertő tó) and the Eszterházy palace in Fertőd. 😍

Went by train to spend the day in Sopron and we were t disappointed. Lovely old buildings narrow cobbled streets , beautiful churches . We went in December and only a few locals around ! The square was decorated for Christmas and a huge Christmas tree,. Very cold but so glad we visited, only E42 return for the four of us ! Took about 80 minutes but saw some amazing scenery and sights.

Not much more I can add that the other reviewers have covered so I will try to add some useful info. The old town area is about a 10 min walk from the train station. As you go out the main entrance there is a main road a bit to the left. Get on in and keep waking until you get there. You will pass some interesting churches on the way. There are not a lot of public wc but don't fret, just go into any restaurant (there are many) and ask, they are very accommodating but may ask you to pay. The walk up to the top of the watchtower is worth is if you can handle the stairs. Surprisingly not much shopping to be done. Equally surprising is the Roman ruins which I did not expect to find among the medieval ruins. Just talk the time to wander, the area is not huge but well preserved. I took this side trip as a day trip from Vienna and it was well worth it. Train cost about $16r/t and took about 90 minutes (direct from Veinna no change of trains) with excellent views of the Austrian country side (Sopron is just across the border in Hungary) as well as Austrian wine country. Note: we had a difficult time finding anyone who accepted Euros as Hungary has their own currency but had no problem using plastic. If you found this review helpful please hit the helpful button.

Just across the border from Austria, a great destination. Old town getting quite a bit of restoration but the 'crumbly' sections were just as interesting. Easy to navigate. If you are lucky like we were you may encounter some local dancing, food stalls and wines in the square. Glad we decided to hop across from Austria for a few days.

While many of these small mid-European towns are starting to look similar, this town has a particular charm. Our main reason for staying here was as a base to drive to Vienna, so we were pleasantly surprised at the bonus of finding something interesting to do here. The old town, now surrounded by a major thoroughfare rather than a wall, is very compact and flat. You can see virtually all the attractions on TripAdvisor at a brisk walk in an hour or so. This includes some old Roman walls. DO wear shoes suitable for cobblestones, and do remember just about everything will be closed on Sunday. The people at the Info kiosk speak great English.

We enjoyed strolling around the old town and due to the rain perhaps, we had the entire town to ourselves.
Quite enjoyable!

Well remained medieval town, interesting to look - but it is absolutely empty. No active attractions, no non-hungarian information. Several museums - don't know what were inside.
Navigator leads to town center, but impossible to return - road is closed, not available any information on English.
