I think most tourists go here as soon as they arrive in Tallinn. I did! There are restaurants, shops, museums, beautiful buildings, etc, around here.
Noted the expensive prices of restaurants around here. Generally, averaging about $30-$40 per dish. My goal is to find restaurants just outside the Old Town Walls for more budget-friendly restaurants.

The cobbled square is the epicenter of Tallinn old town where all the meandering streets congregate to this point. Its an incredibly well preserved but living and vibrant town square that hasn't lost too much of its identity to tourism, I do hope it remains that way.
See if you can find the stone slab decorated with a compass rose hidden within all the cobble stones in the centre, from here (although we struggled!) you 'should' be able to see all 5 of the towns church spires from this single point.

Very nice place. There are many restaurants there but I think they're mostly expensive. There is the traditional elk soup restaurant just under the town hall if I recall correctly. They are not so expensive.

During my 3-day stay in the Old Town (except for going out on a half-day trip to the beautiful Kadriorg Park at about a half-hour walk east), it was the area on & right around this square which I found the "most vibrant" part of the Old Town (as seen in plenty of outdoor eating places & shops of all kinds) with heritage buildings on all sides (except on the south side just with the Town Hall) and which are all "quaint-looking" ones I would say although not much colorful except for those on the east side which is also the side with the vibrancy stretching to the small intersection with the Olde Hansa building (with medieval-styled shop & restaurant inside) and a little further down the way to the Old Town's entrance (a gateway flanked by a watchtower on each side); and yes although not quite sure about the age of the buildings (likely mostly built during the glory days of the Hanseatic League dating back to the 14th & 15th centuries), there definitely is one building where I noticed on its top an inscription of a year in the 1400's.
And yes, not as vibrant as this square and the area to the east, but still quite worthwhile of a visit are Toompea Hill to the west (at just about a 5-minute walk from this square to the bottom of the "short stairway" leading to the top with nice sites above the hill such as the orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Parliament, the "viewing platform" & the Kiek in de Kok fortification museum) and St. Olaf's Church to the north (at about a 15-minute walk from this square to the Old Town's most prominent church with a "pretty high" ceiling to look up inside).

We stayed near this place so we saw it several times and sat on a bench to enjoy the sunshine. It’s one of the most beautiful main square in Europe with the Gothic town hall and other nice historic buildings. It’s very popular for tourists and local people, there are lots of restaurants, bars and cafes. It’s a must-see attraction.

I happened to visit the place on a Sunday. There was a medieval styled event going on. Singing, medieval clothing and tents. Pretty funky experience.

Beautiful area. Less crowded than I had imagined. Was easy to get a table for six people. There are a lot of restaurants and bars where you can have a meal and drinks. Great opportunity for photos also.

We want to go to Tallinn in December 2017 for the Christmas market. Is it a good market firstly?
Also Is there an outdoor ice skating rink anywhere in the city?
And finally I will be going with my girlfriend for 4 days. I imagine the Christmas market will take up one day but what is there to do on the other days and the evenings? Can't seem to get a straight answer anywhere! We're both aged between 19-22

Hello, the market is good, but I think You will spend there 2-3 hours, not a day. Outdoor ice ring is in the OldTown on Harju street, Can recommend .
Try to enjoy Tallinn old town, but also seaside with seaplane harbour, Kadriorg and KUMU museum, go to ski at Pirita or Nõmme...
Shure, You will like Tallinn

Hi. Could anyone recommend a hotel room in the old town square for 2 adults and 3 kids? Preferably something with some character and good views of the town square.
Cheers
Anything in mainly in the old town is basic,
3 star
They do have character
but breakfasts are limited
The better ones just on the outskirts like the other Pk marine
Or the kruetzwald hotel
The st Olav is very central good walking distance to the square
And good value for money
But don't expect anything special for breakfast
