The story behind this unique architecture tells of its Latvian owner who was denied membership in the powerful Great Guild; to show his displeasure, he built two cat sculptures on his roof with their backsides facing the Guild and their tails straight up to finish the insult.

The Cat House is not anything particular unless you know the story behind that cat on the top. It apparently was 2 Business men that were competing and could not stand each other. So the one owning the house put that sculpture of the cat lifting its tail and showing its butt pointing in the direction of the office of... More

There is a story about the cats on the top of this building, it's been mentioned before so I won't repeat it. It's very easy to miss so just look up, there is a casino in the bottom of this building and not much more, during Christmas there is a small market in the open square by this building.

Old school yellow building on the corner of the market. A huge fuss about it which lead to a disappointment - there is nothing to see.

Yellow Art Nouveau building in Meistaru iela 19. Easy to miss, has two cats on the roof! Worth a visit just to see the cats.

The story is very sweet & the cats are an interesting local roof line; it is worth seeking the building out to just see it for yourself ....

I passed this house several times, because it's in the center of Old town and saw nothing unusual except a nice building. Then once I saw people taking pics of the roofs??? I looked up and saw those interesting decorations on two spire like roof tops. Then, I heard an interesting legend of a local, and that's it...nice house with... More

This is one of those places you just have to see. For Cat lovers it is of particular interest. Built early in the 20th century, there is a great legend behind it. The Cats with their tails up and pointed to the house of Great Guild do so for spite. Apparently the owner had a grudge against the guild and... More

I was wandering around Old Riga and was attracted by a cat on a roof. I liked the idea and two figurines did look interesting against the cloudy October sky that day. Later I found out that it was 'the' famous cat building.
