Description:

Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions...

Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions and the only World Heritage listed building in the State. The Prison was built by convicts in the 1850s and was used as a place of incarceration for almost 140 years. With solitary cells and gallows Fremantle Prison is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent. Fremantle Prison now holds the key to history, mystery and fun. Step inside and do time with experienced guides on a fascinating Prison Day Tour. Explore the labyrinth of tunnels 20m beneath the Prison by foot and by boat on a Tunnels Tour adventure. Feeling brave? Delve into the darker side of the Prison’s history on an eerie Torchlight Tour.

We took one of a few guided tours on offer as no-one is allowed to wander around the prison grounds without a guide. The tour was interesting and the guide was well educated about the prison's history and inmate stories. could be longer though as 90 minutes doesn't allow enough time to take it all in.

My husband, kids (7 and 9) and I took part in the Doing Time Tour today. We all loved every second. Jim, an ex prison guard was the perfect guide. He really couldn't have done a more amazing job. He was immensely entertaining, funny and also informative. His experience in the prison system was definitely beneficial. I can't imagine any... More

Took the 'Doing Time' tour, confidently led by Justin. He had a large group, and handled the wide range of interests with ease. The strength of the prison is that was used as such until comparatively recently, and much infrastructure is still in place. The guide just needs to point out what features relate to what period, give a bit... More

Visited this lovely old town whilst in Perth, WA. from the harbour, through the colonial style streets, it was a delight to see. The old jail was a a curiosity not to be missed. Finally enjoyed a fish tea at the waterfront.

I have been here multiple times since the early 2000's for the night-time tour. The tour itself has evolved over the years, and is great fun (if you aren't too scared!) Well worth a visit, particularly if you from out of town.Gives a lot of info regarding the early years of WA, as well as being entertaining throughout.

We had a tour guide called Brett and he was so funny and full of knowledge!! He had great stories about previous tours (my personal favourite being the time he was doing a tour when a man came up to him asking to visit the cell he'd been in back in the 70's!!) Not that expensive and so interesting so... More
