We joined the tour on 'self drive' which was driving ourselves (in our own 4WD) and getting everything else involved with the tour - for just $25 each. We had a really great evening!! We were lucky enough to see two blue penguins being released into the wild after a period of rehabilitation - and an opportunity to see how... More

Best to check out the optimum nesting period so to catch sight of the penguins otherwise you might not see much in the wild, or just their wee recovery boxes with a few penguins being nursed.

Hello there, Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience with us on Tripadvisor. It is true that there are times of the year when penguins are not as present as others. They use land to breed and to molt and over winter they periodically come and go in a pre-breeding mode. We know the times... More

Personal tour of a special locations where little blue penguins are being protected in their natural environment. The family who started and maintain the habitat have a fascinating story of how a few people can make an impact to protect a vulnerable species. Be prepared for spectacular views while being driven along one-lane mountain roads. Rain/weather gear provided for the... More

Hi there, Thank you so much for your title, it is indeed a good proof that anyone can do something. Just put your mind to the issue and solutions are there. Penguins can be seen from mid August to mid February (breeding and molting seasons) and starting again within the first week of April, they will be periodically coming and... More

We heard about Pohatu from a family we met in Christchurch and had a few days open on our itinerary. In the month we have been traveling around New Zealand (15 different stops), this was the best experience we had. I've never experienced a family run organization where everyone was not only friendly and knowledgeable, but truly seemed to get... More

The nighttime tour was a highlight of my recent trip to NZ. It's near impossible to have an understanding of this operation until you partake in this tour, but it is worth every cent! Learning about the family that bought the property surrounding Flea Bay all those decades ago is truly inspiring. Their ideas and actions in regards to environmental... More
