Until 2006 this southern California canyon oasis property was a commercial trout farm and hatchery. It was added to Wilderness Preserve properties. The volume of water and oasis potential are matched only by the Agua Caliente Tribe's Palm Canyon Preserve. The vegetation in the Whitewater preserve is more mountain riparian. It is a natural treasure.

How many times have you driven by an exit on the freeway that seems to lead nowhere and asked yourself, "I wonder where that goes?" This time we decided to find out. At the end of this desolate road you will find the Whitewater Wilderness Preserve. It is an unexpected treat. In the middle of a desert wilderness is a... More

The Whitewater Wilderness preserve is located East of Palm Springs, CA. At certain times of year the preserve has wildly flowing waters, at other times it is almost dry, The preserve offers hiking and photography opportunities. There are "lakes" inside an enclosed area that may be fished.

Visited with friends who have been living in Palm Springs for about six months. This is one of their favorite places and I can understand why. Peaceful. Quiet, Beautiful. We spent several hours here exploring and it was wonderful

We hiked the canyon view loop. the hike is about 3.6 miles. we did the loop counter clock wise. the switch backs up were fun. the views were wonderful.... More

We had never been to Palm Springs and this was our first time hiking in California -- and it was amazing. The four of us took the 3-1/2 mi loop trail which climbed up and up on switch-backs which gave us a spectacular view of the desert below. The hike back down to the Ranger Station was loaded with gorgeous... More

I have been to Palm Springs many times but since we travelled with our large breed dog this time I needed to find some activities that allow dogs. And this was a very nice and unexpected find that was well worth the time to go there. Easy directions (about 20 miles from Palm Springs), good road, plenty of parking, ranger... More

I found out about this Preserve from a Palm Springs local, a true hidden gem. There is a good Ranger Station at the Trail Head with lots of local data on Wildlife and flora and fauna......we were lucky to see a herd of Bighorn Sheep shortly after we left the trailhead. There are lots of different options on difficulty, we... More

The Whitewater Preserve seems 1,000 miles away from the congested, paved, frenetic Los Angeles Basin, and yet it's close by, just a few minutes from Palm Springs. The heart of the Preserve is the Whitewater River, which drains a large area of the mountains and therefore has water in it, of varying quantities, throughout the year. The main attraction is... This is a nice spot to spend a morning or afternoon hiking. Nice desert scenery. Helpful ranger. A variety of well-marked trails that intersect with the Pacific Crest Trail in spots.
