We took this train from LA to Oakland on a Sunday in April so the train was not even half full. We ate dinner in the dining car; I had the chicken and he had the steak - both were great. Only complaint is that the chicken was a little dry. When traveling North, you will want to grab a... More

I took my wife on this train despite her objections to train travel. We took it from LA to Salinas, and then from Emeryville (San Francisco) to Portland. Our intent was to travel to Seattle, but there was track work north of Portland so we were bussed the rest of the way (planned weeks in advance). Sat in coach from... More

We travelled from LA to Seattle on the Coast a Starlight, because we have enjoyed overnight train trips in sleepers in Australia and Canada and because we were led to believe this was a ride not to be missed. The service from the start was good and continued to be that way - friendly and helpful. Our sleeping car was... More

This is a wonderful way to travel. We recently took the Coast Starlight from Seattle to Los Angeles and back. We had a bedroom which entitled us to the excellent meals in the dining car plus the use of the Parlor car. These are really great. The service and food are very good. We really enjoyed the views, meals and... More

For the first leg of our journey, my wife and I took the Coast Starlight Amtrak train from San Jose California to Seattle Washington. We've never done a train trip before, so the entire experience was a bit of an adventure. The train left Diridon station at around 8:20pm on a Monday, and arrived into Seattle's King Street station a... More

If you like train rides, this is a must. Leaves 10:10 AM arriving in Seattle at 8:37 PM the following night. The name is a bit misleading as the trip is about 1400 miles and you travel the ocean for 104. However, Puget Sound also is a waterfront track just before arriving in Seattle. For golfers, you pass directly next... More

Checking in at the Metropolitan Lounge in LA we were made to feel very welcome by the agent. The same welcome was given by the red cap guide who drove us right to the train. The train soon arrived and we were welcome aboard and shown our roomette. The roomettes are tight for space but quite comfortable. We enjoyed lunch... More

Checked 2 bags and travelled from San Francisco (Oakland) to Santa Barbara which took 9 hours. I should say that the highlight of the trip was the views, but in equal measure, I loved sitting in the viewing carriage and meeting other travellers and especially enjoyed hearing the best announcements I’ve ever heard on a train by the guy in... We traveled by train from Carlsbad transferring to the Coast Starlight to Seattle with a connecting bus to Vancouver Canada. As we booked a sleeper car it was first class all the way. The Parlour Car was very romantic for meals, movies or just to watch the scenery around and above. The meals are included and are wonderful. I give... More

We have traveled the Coast Starlight many times over the past 2 decades. Our first experience was amazing. This past experience was TERRIBLE. The lounge car for the first class passengers (I hesitate to refer to it as First Class) was filthy and worn. I was disgusted! There was trash all over the bar, on the tables, and the floors....
