It's a fairly quick drive from Durango, but the tree carvings posted around the lake tell an interesting story about a devastating fire. The lake and the surrounding area is beautiful.

Visited both Lemon and Vellecito Lakes. Vellecito was absolutely beautiful. Gorgeous view...would build a cabin if I won the lottery! First time there, heard from the locals that the water was up! Apparently, there was a fire in 2002, destroyed a lot of the forest...More

We spent three days in a cabin here. The lake is close to Durango but feels very rural. Yes, there are home all along the lake but the are also many open areas. It was great to just sit on the deck of our cabin...More

This is an artificial lake and you can tell. That said, nice for an artificial lake. The road around the reservoir is only available during the warmer months, so one has to double back during the winter.

Drove around the reservoir, where there were some really nice views. The problem was they were either private property or fee based areas. It wasn't until we got to the dam that we realized there was a free area. Covered in goose droppings. It is...More

Paved all the way to both Vallecito & Lemon lakes. Somewhat rough ride if you want to drive the perimeter of Vallecito Lake, which has some great views and doesn't take too long.
