I love coming upon the Housatonic. As a lad of 13 my dad and I would cross Long Island Sound from Huntington Harbor in our 18-foot runabout and follow it from its mouth up around eight or nine miles until its navigability became dubious. The Housatonic is a great river especially in Salisbury and Cornwall. You can paddle it or fly fish. Some great picnic spots off the river near The Great Falls in Falls Village.

I live nearby, so it's not much of a trip for me to get on the Housatonic. I mostly fish the upper Trout Management Area, between Cornwall Bridge and Salisbury. The wadeable parts are in Cornwall. Access is excellent, which means a lot of company during peak season and weekends. However, a little walking and you'll have the place to... More
