In decades past, the Chesapeake was noted for the huge flocks of waterfowl (geese, swans and ducks) that came every winter to escape the ice and snow of Canada. Thanks to improving water quality and terrific management programs, the huge flocks are starting to return. And one of the best spots to see hundreds and even thousands of these birds... More

During hunting season the refuge may close for the day so check first. The boardwalk was closed when we were there in mid October. Very disappointed. There are paved and gravel roads. We walked 1/2 mile thru the Wildlife Trail woods. There were butterflies all around me in the Butterfly Garden. It's lovely, peaceful and quiet with so much wildlife... More

We visited in October 2016 and found that the boardwalk overlook trail out to the bay was closed. We were disappointed but the other trails more than made up for it. Gorgeous views of the Chester River and local wildlife. Do not use the bathroom by the boardwalk trail. It's terrifying. Drive to the visitor's center instead.

Some of the areas are closed due to lack of funding and volunteers. Trash here and there as well. Nice office building with many displays. Seems less than inviting than when we were there 2 years ago. Plenty of wildlife around including eagles, red foxes and ospreys. Stop in while in Rock Hall.

We had a short trip here. What a tranquil place it is. Beautiful landscapes, wild birds including nesting Ospreys. Lovely area with butterflies

I came to this area to do some hiking, not see birds as a lot of others seem to do. Coming in the middle of September seemed like it would be a waste of time anyway, since I did not see a lot of animals. I stopped at several locations and did a few hikes. Each place was slightly different... More

Eastern Neck Refuge is a fantastic place. As would be expected, birding, especially waterfowl and raptors, is great. Although October is a bit early for the large migratory flocks, there was still much to be seen, including bald eagles, northern harriers and numerous ducks, geese, shorebirds, gulls and terns. The staff at the refuge center were knowledgeable and friendly. Paths... More

If you want to see a lot of animals, make sure you time your visit with the migratory pattern of the animal that you would like to see. I went at the end of September which just happened to be a time where there wasn't much going on except for seagulls. I did visit at a good time for the... More

It's a long roundabout route to get there if you go from Baltimore, but definitely worth the trip for a nature lover. I chose a cold day to go and that was a problem, but the landscape is diverse with marshes and forests and water bodies, so this would be ideal for migratory birds. Even on my short visit, I... A beautiful little gem of a Wildlife Refuge. Summer may not be the best time to visit, but the Butterfly Trail was full of activity and we did spot a warbler we had never seen before. Bald eagles were on the wing and we did watch a osprey bringing back a fish for its hatchlings (after circling us for a... More
