The trial will ultimately run from Grand Rapids to Ely Minnesota. Currently there are sections that have been completely, others under construction and some just in the planning stage. We stayed in Ely and biked the small part of the trail that goes through town to the International Wolf Center. The section also connects to a four mile circle around... More

My daughter and I biked a portion from Hibbing to Calumet and Hill Annex State Mine. We thoroughly enjoyed the trail despite it's ups and downs (more so than many of the MN bike trails I've enjoyed). However, isn't that part of biking? It can't all be downhill or even flat. Still, how is it that that we seemingly biked... More

Bike Trail basics - the Mesabi is wider than other prominent trails, despite recent storms it was impressively cleared and safe, combination of vast undisturbed nature and super-sized industrial / mining relics was unique. Opportunity to bike a continuously paved ~70 mile trail was a rare pleasure worth the drive. (Grand Rapids - Virginia) Surprise Highlights - Mesabi Trail Shuttle... More

After learning about the Mesabi trail and it's length we knew it needed to be added to our "Bike it" list! We were not disappointed in the least. We started from the Grand Rapids fairgrounds trailhead. It was only $5.00 for a three day wheel pass. Right from the start it was an amazing ride. The scenery was beautiful ,... More

Trail is very hilly and covered with loose gravel in places. It is definitely not recommended for children or young adults as steep uphill and downhill grades with sharp curves are very dangerous. We had one of our party wipe out on a sharp curve that was covered with loose gravel, and there were boulders placed on the outside edge... More

I have used this trail twice starting in Grand Rapids MN. The trail head is in the fairgrounds and easy to get to. I bike with my dogs and there are a couple of side trails to go off on as well. Nice easy bike ride and good exercise for the dogs before getting back on the road :)

Get a trail map before you go since it shows elevations! Enjoyed 3 bike rides during our vacation-short 2.5 mile out and back (total 5 miles) from Grand Rapids due to a thunderstorm, 10 mile out and back (total 20 miles) from Grand Rapids, and 11 miles out and back from Calumet to Keewatin (total 22 miles). We are not... More

From the reviews, we had such high hopes. Previous reviews are correct staying on the trail in town is difficult and in Virginia ~ not recommended. If you can plan your trip to avoid Virginia great, if not get a good city map and don't try to follow the trail. I should back up, we finally found the trail head... More

Rode Mesabi from Chisolm to Biwabik.... maybe farther as part of the TRAM MS ride. I can say it is a beautiful trail that is by no means crowded. There are some short bu steep hills if you are a flat lander! Would lie to explore the trail for a longer period of time.

When I moved here from Illinois 4 years ago, I discovered this wonderful trail. Up and down hills, through woods and rock formations, by mines and over small streams. The trail is paved and you can travel from Grand Rapids to Aurora. I use it to bike from Eveleth to Virginia and Eveleth to Giants' Ridge quite often. You can... More
