The name of the road does it injustice. Yes there is barely any business development on that stretch of the road, but the entire drive is supremely scenic, breathtaking, and an utter joy to drive. Do you like mountain ranges? Do you delight in landscape...More

My partner and I travelled this highway while on a road trip. Plenty of stops to be had off the loneliest highway. Garnet hill, cave lake state park, stokes castle and sand mountain. Worth a look if passing . Breaks the trip up.

Only Highway to travel East- West in my opinion. I've traveled HWY 50 @ least a dozen times round trip from Colorado to California over the past 40 years. Forget 80 and 70. The wide open spaces as far as you can see! Small towns...More

My husband and I had a blast driving down the highway. We loved the wide open spaces and the small towns along the way. Most of all, we loved stamping the Loneliness Highway Passport which can be picked up at any business or point of...More

We road this on our motorcycle after coming through the California Mountains so the day was a long bit of just about everything. US50 is worth doing if you love 2-lane road travel. It isn't the most desolate road we've been on (by far), but...More

We travel between San Francisco and Salt Lake City once or twice a year. Your choices are boring interstate 80 or scenic 50 south of Provo. 80 will get you there faster, but not by much. 50 seems to go by faster, with the winding...More

We drove this road from Great Basin to Reno. It was lonely but not terribly lonely. We found stops along the way for gas and food. You definitely need to plan your drive but that's expected. Also compared to other roads cellular is pretty good....More

We started our drive to California in Denver on I-70, then on to Highway 50. The scenery along Highway 50 is pretty, it got flatter and more desert-like as we headed west. Stop for gas wherever you can, there aren't many towns along the way.

Hi, We would be driving US-50 East from Ely, NV to I-15 in December around Christmas. How should be the snow conditions around this time of the year? Shall I get the snow chains for my rental car. I have read in forums that Ely is at 6000 ft elevation and Great Basin NP is ~10000ft. Please suggest.

The weather this time of year can be quite unpredictable. Currently the roads are all clear and there is little moisture in the forecast except a slight chance of snow Friday & Saturday. If you are renting an all wheel drive... More
