First of all we visited mid May 2017. This park in November 2016 had a 6,000 acre wildfire. Much of the park was burnt and not very scenic as a result. However the hikes themselves were challenging. The trail signage was impeccable. The trails that we hiked that were considerably burnt were: Chestnut Knob to Sawtooth to Horseridge to Possum... More

We enjoyed an afternoon hike here on a beautiful day. One down side is some of the paths are narrow and on a nice day, they are busy. The hike up to the waterfall is moderate, lots of narrow stairs though, so it may be tough for some. Plenty of parking!

My lofty goal of visiting all NC state parks brought me here in early April. Very nice park with great trails. High Shoal Falls is definitely the highlight of this park. Nice facilities.

We had a great time hiking the HQ and High Shoal trails. They are well maintained, and after a heavy rainfall the day before, the waterfall was spectacular. This was a 5 mile loop. If you have time the 8 mile look includes a greta overlook which is worth the hike as well. The park also has remote camp sites... More

I have been going here since I was a little kid. I love that the trail follows the creek so you constantly hear the stream. The water is a fairly good waterfall especially after it rains. I would not suggest doing the loop because the hike is not very pleasant once you go up and around the waterfall. The camp... More

This was my first time at this park and I absolutely loved it! We hiked up to High Shoals Falls on Jacob's Fork River which was beautiful on a moderately challenging hike, but on a very clear and defined path. There were many people there the day we visited, but not so crowded that you couldn't enjoy it. We saw... More

This was my first visit. The horse campground was awesome!! 15 campsites. 33 stalls and 33 miles of easy trails winding through the woods with spectacular views and even picnic tables along the way!! The bathhouse was beautiful and a nice place to take a hot shower after a long ride!! I will go back!! I can only imagine how... More

I've been to South Mountains State park twice and this park is just amazing! I love waterfalls so coming to this place was just perfect. There are different hiking trails you can hike but I think there's only one specific one that leads up to the big waterfall that you see in the picture. There are mini waterfalls along this... More

It was a rainy, dreary day when we visited. We took a lot of nature photographs. Since it was slippery, we did not walk all the way to the waterfall but it looked nice. Lots of information along the paths. We saw lots of folks with the dogs (on leashes). The lady at the Visitor Center was not friendly to... More

I'm amazed that so many folks are unfamiliar with NC's largest state park! South Mountain offers hiking, biking, and horse trails. There are camping sites, picnic sites, and a wonderful education center. There are amazing waterfalls, especially the High Shoals Falls. Trails vary in difficulty from an easy, flat stroll along the river, to quite taxing, steep and rugged climbs... More
