We took trail 9 up and trail 4 down, which was perfect for us. The view at the top of the hike is gorgeous, but it was far too windy for us to eat our lunch or even spend much time at all. We turned around fairly quickly and headed back down to more manageable weather. Our hike, with a... More

This was a quick day hike I decided to make last minute after reading it was one of the more popular and scenic hikes in the Black Hills. Not only that, but it also brings you to the highest point too! Its a great viewing point to see the surrounding Black Hills area! The view is stunning, and it's even... More

We made this into a loop with Little Devil's Tower leaving from Sylvan Lake. This is a somewhat strenuous hike; however, as long as you are in decent shape you should be able to do it. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone with knee issues as there are a lot of steps. At the top you are awarded with amazing... More

Black Elk Peak (formerly known as Harney Peak) is the highest point in South Dakota. There are several hiking routes to the top and I chose to take the one that begins just off of highway 244 at the Willow Creek Horse Camp. From here it is a little more than five miles to the summit with 2200 feet of... More

We saw a lot of great stuff in South Dakota but our hike to Harney Peak was our best experience! We decided to give it a try with our 2 boys, 10 and 13, and we do all hike but not usually distances like this with them. We got to the trailhead early, 7:30am as they were calling for rain... More

Allow time. Dress in layers. Bring water. Pack a camera. The path goes from easy to hard. The last 1/2 miles is steep and definitely a hike. Super fun and a great family activity!

If you love nature and beautiful views you need to do this hike. I would say it's a slightly moderate hike, and gets a little challenging in the last few yards, but it is so worth it. It was about four hours round trip, and that's including the time that was spent exploring the top.

Reviewed by a middle aged, overweight, flatlander. This is a fabulous trail! We started on #9 from Sylvan Lake. Went up Harney Peak & came back the same way. 6.8 miles total. Even if Harney Peak wasn't your final destination, this trail would be stellar. It's just a beautiful Black Hills hike. Part of it is in the Black Elk... More

I've made this hike many times (I'm, a fat, 58 yo woman). When temps are in the 50s, it's easy and pleasant; when it's in the 90s, it's a killer and not much fun. Footing on the trail is almost all easy (a few scrambly bits near the top, never scary) but it IS 7ish miles, mostly uphill. Last half... More

This is a nice hike if you're looking for something that isn't too difficult but still would like to get some exercise. The view at the top is awesome. Very nice scenery on the way up. Parking is tough, very crowded. There were quite a few people on the trail but not enough to hold up the hike.
