We decided to hike up Harney Peak (also called Black Elk Peak) taking the most common hike - the tourist route, from Sylvan Lake trailhead up to the top. This is a moderately difficult hike that's mostly a steady climb with a lot of stairs...More

Most people do the short version of this hike from Sylvan Lake. That's about a seven mile hike round trip. My friend and I decided to do the longer, more challenging version starting from Willow creek Horse Camp trail head off Highway 244. This is...More

If you are a hiker this trail is a must-do if you find yourself in the Black Hills area. The trail is about 7 miles round trip, and meanders through beautiful forest and rocky areas. The scenes all along the way are very delightful. The...More

We managed the hike up Harney Peak and picked out the back of Mt. Rushmore in the distance. We'd highly recommend this hike, as well as going all the way up to the lookout tower when the trail separates near the top.

Great trail and the views are terrific! Not real forested due to pine beetle devastation. Fun trail that is not too aggressive with lots of families and dogs making the trek up. The tower at the top is awesome and don't be afraid to rummage...More

I'm from the area and have climbed to the top of Harney a few times. This time it was on an unseasonably cold August day. I made it up in just under 1.5 hours on Trail 9. I didn't stop much and I'm a fairly...More
