Rode from Dumont to Hill City (approx 30 miles). Trail is in great condition. Almost as good as blacktop. Lots of bridges and several tunnels. Multiple signs noting area facts or historical markers. Very little traffic when we were there. The trail was very safe. I would rate this trail usable for everyone. Make sure you have water and snacks.... More

My husband and I started in Deadwood, staying at the Super 8, adjacent to trail. We carried a small bag on our bike and road to Hill City for the night. We visited Hill City the day before and found the Best Western, to be very close to the trail. However, there were some at the other end of town... More

We did the entire 109 miles, didn't want to carry our gear. So, we booked a wonderful home in Hill City and did the trail in 3 legs. The first leg was from Edgemont to Minnekahta and back. (About 16.2 miles one way and 32.4 miles round trip.). The second leg was from Deadwood to Hill City (about 48 miles)... More

One of the best days ever! We rode from Mystic to Rochford, it was an easy ride - well maintained with beautiful scenery, we even passed a small waterfall - stop at Moonshine Gulch in Rochford if you can for a quick beer.

Beautifully maintained. Stunning ride away from traffic and noise. A little piece of heaven with a gentle 8 mile downhill into Deadwood. No trash. Water along the way..but bring extra because they might run out. Very gentle uphills. Small gravel. Don't bring a road bike. Thank you to the people of South Dakota and Rails to Trails for making this... More

What a great trail! I look forward to biking here each time we come to the Black Hills. One of the nice things about this trail is the not too terrible grade. If you spend time biking up you will be sure to be rewarded with a downhill either by turning around or reaching a top where the grade begins... More

I started my ride in Hill City and made it a little over halfway to Custer before turning around (about 16 miles total-8 miles each way). The portion of the trail I rode offered beautiful scenery and was very well maintained. Just slightly over 700' in gradual elevation, so not too strenuous. Nice, easy, scenic ride. I'm sure other parts... More

Absolutely, perfectly beautiful and maintained. I stayed a week in the Mickelson Trail area from Deadwood to south of Pringle S.D. I rode most of the trail, different days and various distances. I was happy to pay the $4.00 a day pass, because I can see they use the money to maintain regularly. Wow! I bicycle all over. I loved... More

This is a wonderful, well kept, 109 mile trail, with a slight 4% grade overall - suitable for all kinds of travel. The scenery is beautiful and diverse. There are ample ( stop areas ) along the trail, with clean rest rooms.

I visited the Black Hills with my family last weekend. We had never been to the area before and didn't know much about it ahead of time. I discovered this trail, where I went for a run out of the town of Custer. The surface and grade were perfect for jogging, and it's also separate from the road which makes... More
