So I am trying to take every opportunity to observe holiday festivities in DC. The Library of Congress was one of them and I had a wonderful tour given by Gerald, a dear alma mater friend who works there. It had a gorgeous Xmas tree decorated with books dedicated to 50 states. I found my kids’ birth states and mine. ☺️ The Library was built after the Capitol was in a fire in 1814 and it lost everything. Thomas Jefferson sold over 7 thousand books for about $23 thousand dollars to help start a library to provide sources and information for legislators primarily, which is now the Library of Congress. There is an exhibit of TJ’s original books and replicas and a grand room dedicated to scholars in mosaics; I enjoyed it immensely!Visited January 2020Written 2 January 2020
- Lynn SLeague City, Texas618 contributionsWorld's largest library and very beautifulI was so glad to visit this on our reccent trip to DC because I did not have a chance to visit on my previous DC trip. This is the world's largest library (it does not have every single book in the world, but it does have bunches of books and also has a lot of recording too I am told). Anyone 16 years or older can get a library card and check out a book. The building itself inside and out is just spectacular and gorgeous. The library is actually several buildings but the main library is in the Jefferson Building and that's where you want to visit unless you're going to do research. Right now they are requiring timed entry passes which you can get online for free. The only time I could get was 10:45am (opening time) on Tuesday, and we had a Capitol tour scheduled an hour later. It was a short walk from there to the Capitol so we figured we had about 45 minutes for our visit and that turned out to be enough. The big items we saw were the Guttenburg Bible and Thomas Jefferson's Library (which he donated to Congress to begin the library). Not all of Jefferson's Library was viewable as some books were not there due to them digitizing the entire library. The view of the great reading room is just breathtaking. While you can definitely spend more than an hour here, if you are pressed for time, you can get it done in less than an hour for sure.Visited May 2022Written 9 June 2022

Who has time for a library? Well, get that notion of what you think a library is all about before your cross the threshold of this truly spectacular representation of art, science, law, poetry, engineering, technology. It's just beyond words. They say there is more gold in the walls, murals and paintings than the rest of the city combined. It was the first building to have electricity and until 1940, it was the premier home of all knowledge about America. I was able to go on a private tour but they have public ones that are worth it. Take the time to learn about the paintings, marble statutes and take some time to get yourself a library card! All you need is a current passport or driver's license and you too can look at the books in the stacks. No, we can't check anything out. I'm posting some photos from the tour. Some of the spaces were on the private tour, like the card catalog and the Senate reading room.Visited January 2020Written 15 January 2020

I am a foreign researcher and I wanted to do some research at the Library of Congress. However, employees were so aggressive and impolite that I was forced to cancel my plan as communication was impossible. The staff (security guards, especially two women at the office where people have to leave their bags, and librarians) did not answer to my hellos, goodbyes and questions, looking at me annoyed (especially when hearing my foreign accent) and violently yelling directions at me. The most aggressive person was a man wearing a mask at the registration card office who yelled at me directions, looking at me with a threatening look as if he was about to hit me. Due to this awful climate, I only stayed two hours as it was impossible to do research. When I asked a young lady at the security office if I could retrieve the bag I had to leave there before, she looked at me in a nasty way as if I was disturbing her as she was doing her nails. She put my bag on the desk not even looking at me. If you are a researcher looking for a particular document the experience will be extremely painful and unproductive. I am shocked that the chief of staff of the Library of Congress and its directors authorize such deplorable behaviors of their staff.

This tour was much more than my partner and I had expected! You do need to schedule a timeslot online to enter, but the tour is self guided and free. You can enter the research library which is still active and the architecture is amazing. They also have Thomas Jeffersons Personal Library which is very cool!

Stunning huge building across from the Capitol Building. We managed to scan the barcode while on the Capitol Building tour. Well worth a visit. Has an impressive green dome on the top and an incredible library section. Also holds the famous Gutenberg Bible

The entire Library of Congress is incredibly impressive. The Main Hall is superbly ornate, but the entire building is adorned with art, mosaics, statues, and architecturally appealing craftmanship. An added treat was to see an authentic Gutenberg Bible from the mid-1400s... one of only 21 complete copies still in existence today.

Jefferson library was fascinating. The architecture and art was beautiful. Be sure to ask questions to the volunteers. One woman we spoke with was so knowledgeable and engaging. We appreciated her time and willingness to share.

We came to the library after the tour of the United States Capitol. Just scanned the code and got our passes. Our 8-year-old grandson got the brochure to do the Scavenger Hunt, which he enjoyed a lot

This is a must-see in DC. The building itself is absolutely incredible, but make sure you ask the guides for information. They will share so much that will open your eyes as to what the Library of Congress really is- the world's research library. Try to get there before 3pm so that you are able to walk through the reading room. If it's closed, you can see it from above, but it's special to be able to walk through it as well.

We visited almost every museum, the Capitol building, all the monuments, and the Library of Congress was definitely the highlight of our trip. We had no idea what to expect, and we were completely amazed and awestruck by the architecture inside the building. It’s the only place in this country where are you can see anything that closely resembles something you might see in Europe. The paintings on the ceilings and walls with the intricate detail were simply amazing. If you are there at 2 PM, you are able to go into the actual Library of Congress, but they keep the line moving at a quick pace, but you are allowed to take photos.
After you see the Capitol building you walk through the hall to the Library of Congress and I would definitely suggest that you take the time to do this!

Hi, for the security check before entering the Jefferson building, can we bring water (in plastic water bottle), and food (e.g. bread and energy bar) ? if not, is there a place to put those items for us to get back after the visit? thanks

I had a water bottle with me and a small crossbody, i would imagine if you had your energy bar/snacks in a small bag it would be fine. I don’t remember seeing lockers but I wasn’t looking for them (I definitely saw them at the African American Smithsonian). You can check their website to see if they have more detailed info.

My family will be visiting DC for a day (so time is short!) and my young daughter wants to visit the Library of Congress. Which of the three buildings is "the one" to visit?
Jefferson, Madison, or Adams?
Thank you!

Jefferson. With the timed entry pass (because of Covid), you will see the special exhibits, rotunda, gift shop, and several regular exhibits. You can also see into the Reading Room research area from the 3rd level overlook. Architecture is stunning. Worth the visit.
Good day! The Library of Congress is amazing! I write a work about history of library. It is very interesting! But I need your help.
In many sources it is written that the library suffered 4 fires. I found information about fires in 1814, 1825 and 1851 years on sites of American history and in books. However I can't find some information about fourth burning. Tell me please when it happened? Which year was this fourth fire? And how many losses were there?
It is VERY important for me. I would be grateful you so much!

I'm going to DC in May 2019 and would love to take the guided tour at the Library of Congress. How do you sign up or do you have to register ahead of your visit?

We wandered into the Library on a friend's recommendation and were awed. We sat down to watch a video and were then offered a guided tour on the spot. It was well worth it. The building and its contents are amazing. Our visit was in October, when Congress was not in session, so maybe the availability of spontaneous tours was greater. The library is so interesting, you may want to ask your Congressperson to sign you up for a scheduled time to be sure you get the tour. If that doesn't pan out, you can still try once in the building.

I would plan 2-3 hours so as not to rush. The tour guides seem very good. My cousin works there so she took us around herself. Much more than a library!!
