The gallery has two buildings, with the East one dedicated to modern art. There is a concourse that runs under the street between the two buildings with an excellent children's gift shop and a Leo Villarreal light sculpture that shouldn't be missed. Another must-see is the Calder mobile in the East building lobby. Pro tip- you can charge your phone... More

The current Della Robbia exhibit is extraordinary and makes a great foundation for a broader visit. Suggest 2-3 hours, more if you elect to visit the magnificent medieval, renaissance, baroque, and other period rooms. The gift shop is a great stop for birthday gifts and other presents.

The National Gallery of Art really impressed me. I have been to so many art museums being an artist myself, but this one was a great joy. I did the free audio tour. Since I went in early January there were not a lot of people. It have me a chance to sit in the great rooms and listen to... More

Visiting the East Bldg. is like hitting 3 pointers over and over ... I tripped over Picasso and Matisse in my rush to get to the Calder exhibit. It was worth it!! They have expanded and their numerous Calders here are great & I could spend hours in that one room... A lot of small pieces I have not seen...... More

I was fortunate to get to see the Ai Weiwei installations on my visit here. His art is very moving, real and political. But at the same time there is a grand design to it all.

Hard to beat the sheer variety of pieces and exhibits, and it's a great place to wile away a few hours.

You need to take a whole day (at least). Lots of wonderful pieces. I spent an hour in the Van Gogh/Gaugin room alone. The cafes (there are several of them) are also very nice.

So many great pieces here. Even if you don't know much about art the gallery will captivate you. One could easily spend hours here.

The newly reopened East Wing is a must see as part of the National Gallery of Art! 4 times the amount of display space - great side by side comparisons of Impressionism, Fauvism, and modernism. Light, airy space, and so easy to engage with the art in the new layout. A Plus is the lovely, outdoor roof garden with the... More
