I took the metro to the nearest station, to find on arrival that The Barracks are part of a very interesting walk thro the local area, each point of interest having its own sign and accompanying description. For security reasons, access, and viewing are limited but it's well worth the trip.

Lots happening here. You can take a tour of the Marine Barracks, the Marine band plays at designated times. There was a change of the guard or lowering of the flag ceremony. And the area has some surprisingly good restaurants and night life. Check it out

If you are patriotic and appreciate the pomp and circumstance of the military tradition, come to the barracks for an evening parade. Tickets are free, but are required to view the parade. If you are a Sousa enthusiast, you will appreciate that his former home is nearby as well.

We saw the last parade of the season and it was incredible. The history of the barracks itself and the fine men and women of the parade put on an excellent show. It was amazing and definitely a must do event. The parades are every Friday from the end of April until August.

To completely understand this ceremony you should know that this Barracks and the white sided house at the end of the parade deck are the oldest inhabited federal buildings in Washington DC. During the war of 1812 against the British, the US Marines, though completely outnumbered, fought valiantly but could not stop the British assault into the city. The British... More

This is a beautiful house in DC that is an actual functioning Marine Barracks where the Commandant of the Marine Corps actually lives. This is also the home of the famous Marine Silent Drill Team that you can watch on Friday evenings for free in the summer. I think once a year, in October, they open the house to the... More

The "oldest post in the Marine Corps" and very few know it's there. After experiencing the spectacular Friday Evening Parade, I searched all the tour guides and found nothing. An amazing event of patriotic music, precision marching and honoring those past, present and future that protect our freedom. The President's Own Band, the Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corp, the... Every Friday evening there is a free event on the grounds where the troops are reviewed. The Marines stationed here do an amazing job of being both hosts by sharing the stories and doing their review. Seeing the Drum and Fife Corps as well as the Commandant's Own Band was a real treat. Tickets are free, but get them online... More

We were there on what had to be one of the hottest and most humid evenings of the year (as much water as you wanted was readily available). We'd received our tickets several months in advance but the seat was not reserved. It was recommended that we arrive no later than 7:45 as the general public would then be invited... More
